The irony of the timing of this post cannot go unnoticed, (I just put up a post about the immeasurable value of the “present moment” and now a post about something that “transports” you through time? Come on!) but despite this, neither could the insane awesomeness that is this website. Ergo, I present to you, YouTube Time Machine.
It’s function is primarily described in its title, as in any standard model time machine, you slide your marker to the desired year on the timeline (ranging from 1860 to 2010) and via YouTube, a whole bunch of videos are then gathered within the categories of “Video Games”, “Television”, “Commercials”, “Current Events”, “Sports”, “Movies”, and “Music”.
Sayeth Justin Johnson, one of the creators of this website:
I had been up very late watching Michael Jordan videos from 1996. It made me feel so awesome deep down inside … like it was Sunday afternoon, and I was 14, sipping on a milkshake and watching my fav team play. That Jordan-fest lurched into a 4 am search for Primal Rage videos, and countless other mid-90s stuff.
I realized then, that it wasn’t specifically Jordan or Primal Rage videos I was searching for … it was 1996 … the feeling of being in 1996 …the intangibles of that year fascinated me, but getting bogged down in the specifics and having to make CHOICES eventually spoiled my quest.
As I was lost, in the mists of time, Del broke me out of my ponderous silence and said “DUDE! THAT SHOULD BE A WEBSITE!!” I said “YES!” he said “YES!” – and then we probably high 5’ed.
I visited the website a few nights ago and pretty much displayed the same type of enthusiasm described by Johnson. Because “YES!” and “OMG!” are the just about the perfect words to describe your feelings when you set the marker to 1935 and are presented with classic Mickey Mouse cartoons, and set it to 1969 and dive into a Lakers vs. Celtics Game 7 4th Quarter NBA Finals game, or even when you land on 1999 and are reminded of that mind-numbing classic “Blue (Da Ba Dee)“.
Because as sweet as it is to live in the “present”, there’s no denying the occasional trip down memory lane is sure to set your face ablaze with smiles and make you appreciate everything you have at this moment and all it took to get you here.
