I’m going to keep this short and sweet so that you can all get to the juicy part of this post. On March 30th of this year, world renown trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis appeared at the 22nd Annual Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy and dazzled an audience as he gave a lecture/performance he titled The Ballad of the American Arts. In this lecture, he takes our American history and describes the pivotal role our arts and culture have played in creating our American Identity.
When I first clicked to watch this video I found that the lecture was 70 minutes long! Please believe me when I say it is truly worth watching. If you don’t have time right now, make some time later or watch it in segments because it is an absolute gem of a video and I feel so lucky we are even able to watch this and share it online.
To say the very least, Marsalis has a captivating voice and his method of storytelling infused with the sweet sweet tunes of his orchestra pulled me in from the very start and left me awestruck.
And now I’ll leave you with the words of Mr. Marsalis himself:
Now is the time to realize, this is our story, this is our song, if well sung, it tells us who we are and where we belong. And what is in those songs and the way we sing them is all you know. It’s all you need to know and is all you will ever need to know.
Love!
Carla
