Documentary: The Century of the Self

Building Construction
Recently I have been pondering the merits and short comings of the society I live in. I live roughly in a suburb of a city. Most of my food is imported from other places. I am lucky to have access to clean, running, water. There is a lot of waste and garbage. Some of this is created to protect people and keep everyone healthy (see my recent experience with FoodSafe). Some (if not all) of this is unnecessary. This is far from the life Jackson recently wrote about…

So go on craigslist and start looking at land. You will have to leave the major cities. Major cities are not currently set up to support the number of humans dwelling within them. They could be, but they currently are not. Leave the cities, go back to the country. Google permaculture and take some lessons. Buy some used books, or better yet, trade for them. Steal them.

Several people recommended I watch this little e-documentary called The Century of the Self which you can view online for free.

The film comes in four parts and the synopsis reads as follows:

To many in both business and government, the triumph of the self is the ultimate expression of democracy, where power is truly moved into the hands of the people. Certainly the people may feel they are in charge, but are they really? The Century of the Self tells the untold and controversial story of the growth of the mass-consumer society. How is the all-consuming self created, by whom, and in whose interest?

The Freud dynasty is at the heart of this compelling social history. Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis; Edward Bernays, who invented public relations; Anna Freud, Sigmund’s devoted daughter; and present-day PR guru and Sigmund’s great grandson, Matthew Freud. Sigmund Freud’s work into the bubbling and murky world of the subconscious changed the world. By introducing a technique to probe the unconscious mind, Freud provided useful tools for understanding the secret desires of the masses. Unwittingly, his work served as the precursor to a world full of political spin doctors, marketing moguls, and society’s belief that the pursuit of satisfaction and happiness is man’s ultimate goal.

I had never really pondered the origins of the mass, consumerist culture I have been raised in.

I think my currently living arrangement has a number of side effects which are hurting the Earth, however I do not think the intentions are bad. I think somewhere along the line, people just wanted to help people. And help themselves. And protect people. And protect themselves. And I can see why you would want to do that.

How can we get creative and turn these problems into celebrations?

Lets do this! Go team!

A reminder from a friend

Hello friends, it’s been a while since I last posted here and I hope everyone’s doing awesome.

Today, I’ld like to share with you an email that my friend Chia Chia wrote in reflection of a work-trip to Shanghai that we had. Reproduced with her kind permission, this is a reminder to myself of what I can do for this planet of ours.

A bit about Chia Chia – she is a full-time volunteer at a Singapore-based non-profit organisation called Ground-Up Initiative. Here’s how they describe themeselves.

About Ground-Up Initiative (GUI)

GUI is a community-based and volunteer-driven non-profit organisation that brings together people who value reconnecting with and nurturing the land. Since April 2009, we have progressively built a Sustainable Living Kampung (SL Kampung), based at Bottle Tree Park, Yishun, where we promote environmental awareness and responsible practices by encouraging more people to come together to work, learn, play and in the process, care for humanity and the earth. SL Kampung is open to the public. To find out more about us, do check out our website  at http://groundupinitiative.org/ or visit our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/groundupinitiative

Read on my friends. Cheers!

of Detached Cities & the need for EARTH CARE, PEOPLE CARE & FAIR SHARE

One of my biggest takeaway from this exchange is to hear from the locals, and one of my aki friend who has been working in Shanghai, their thoughts on how Shanghai is developing. Quite disturbing but it rings true of our cities is that people are increasingly feeling detached from the very city they build…feelings of angst..helplessness. My friend told me “i know of the problems, but there’s nothing i can do.”

Seeing this strengthens my belief that we have to rethink our track of development. The urgency of this cannot be ignored. We do have opportunities and are in a good position to influence the people we work with, the clients we work for, the materials we use, even our own families and friends etc.

“Work” is taking up a majority of our modern lives now…and it is easy to get pigeon-holed into our lives as “professionals”…Architects, Engineers, Developers etc. A common grouse i hear from my friends is “life is tough…”. When they hear of what I’m doing in Ground-Up Initiative, the common response is that “Wow! U’ve earned enough to go into retirement?!” or “Why are you giving up Architecture?”.

Even on this Shanghai trip, i’ve been asked the same questions. To me, i’m simply living my life…responsibly. To have deep consciousness and gratitude…to share and care for people and the very Earth that supports us all.

We are blessed in many ways… there are many people in our societies who do not have the opportunities and options like we do. How then do we pull our skills and resources together to create positive change? to have sustainable development not at the expense of the less privileged, not at the expense of environmental degregation?

of HARDware Vs HEARTware : the strange case of Sanitarywares vs Funny Bunnies / Fan Bing Bing Syndrome

We are lacking not in Hardware, but in Heartware.

a simplistic example will be how we’re talking more about the “funny bunnies” than the sanitary products we see at the Expo during our Shanghai trip…the stampede of people rushing to see Fan Bing Bing rather than the latest brands of bath wares. The social connections are what engages & draws people together.

What we build plays a big part in this “supply & demand chain”, currently driven more by Wants than by Needs. It is disturbing to know of what drives our Youths today…How Youths are willing to sacrifice their sense of smell for technology (see attached report “Truth About Youth”) and how a Chinese teen is selling his Kidney for an iPad2!

If this is the future we’re headed for, a society of Wants…all talks on sustainable technologies, environmental conservation will be feeble attempts to slow our paths to self destruction.

If i were to redefine Architecture, I’d like to see myself as being an “architect of life”, it is not only about the buildings or landscapes we design…it is also about building relationships with the people we work with, the people we’re designing for and the greater Earth that we all share..

To Connect and to Heal our environments and the people around us.

It is not a lofty aspiration, everyone of us Can do it. It is only a matter of making the choice.

to Live, to Green and to Give

we need to redefine “Progress” and it take everyone’s effort to make the shift in perspectives.

Only when perspectives & attitudes change will we see a shift towards a model for sustainable development. Redefining economies, our built environment and our landscapes. Here’s to share a ted talk link about the “Happy Planet Index”. Ultimately, are we not seeking happiness in our lives? To be able to Receive and to Give is a blessing…

…of Dreams & Possibilities

i do dream of a better world…to turn dreams to realities takes time & effort

If you’ve managed to read this far into my email and find that things resonates, lets come together to explore the possibilities ahead.

I will be travelling in Europe from 06-25.June and may not be checking on my mails regularly. But do write and we can link up when i’m back.

That said, you guys are always welcomed to come by our SL Kampung and get to know the many interesting & sincere people who are part of this movement. From engineers, to accountants, social workers, psychologist, artists, graphic designers, chefs, students, teachers, neighbourhood aunties and uncles, young & old…

For those of you who came before, i’d like to emphasis that it is not just about urban farming per say. Urban farming is a platform and a starting point for us to reconnect with Nature and People. It is the building up a community that supports one another that is the key.

it is not about Ground-Up Initiative as an organisation…but Ground-Up Initiative as a Movement to inspire positive change, first in ourselves and then our Brave New World…

How to Become a Superhero…

(image via)

I came across this interesting article on James Altucher‘s site The Altucher Confidential – Ideas for a World Out of Balance and thought it’d jive with all you SFers. When donating to major charities, chances are, the millionaires and billionaires of the world have that covered, and you’ll never know exactly where your money goes and who and how you’re helping. So if you want to affect a specific person, situation or cause, find one that your money can go to directly, without any layers of bureaucracy. Sounds pretty simple and direct! Win-Win!

Anyone can be a superhero. Here’s the rule for being your own Micro-Charity

1)      You are donating directly into the situation. So you know that every dollar is being put to work exactly the way you want it to be. No layers of bureaucracy that are found at many large charities.

2)      The situation needs help right now. TODAY. And you can help. It’s easy to find these situations. Look in any local paper. Papers feed on pain. There’s always someone today in your area who is in pain for some reason and needs help. An example we all saw on youtube last week was the kid getting bullied who got suspended when he fought back. Get that kid a math tutor while he’s suspended.

3) The donation MUST be anonymous. Or as anonymous as possible. For several reasons:

  1. Legal issues. If you put someone up in a hotel and, god forbid, there’s a one in a million chance something goes wrong in the hotel, you don’t want to be legally responsible.
  2. Ego. This is charity. You can’t let it feed your ego at all. Nobody must know. Not the people you are helping. Not anyone else. Its like when Superman saves someone from being run over by a bus. He’s done. Now he just flies off to the next situation.
  3. Risk. You’re not really a trained giver and in some situations (very rare) you might find yourself in an inappropriate situation. Best you can just wipe your hands and move on. These situations are rare though and do not supersede the greater good being done in most cases.

I can guarantee you this will feel a lot better than handing $100 over to whatever mega-charity is already getting billions from the billionaires. Let Bill Gates save the world. You can save a life.

REPOST: MGMT – The Youth!

Jackson posted this video back in 2008, and it’s totally worth reposting! We’ve been singing the song almost daily for the past two months. The video is amazing, the song is amazing, the lyrics are amazing and totally on message with what we have all been talking about! Let’s change the world by changing ourselves – Together! Are you starting to change?

—————————

This is a call of arms to live and love and sleep together
We could flood the streets with love or light or heat whatever
Lock the parents out, cut a rug, twist and shout
Wave your hands
Make it rain
For stars will rise again

The youth is starting to change
Are you starting to change?
Are you?
Together

In a couple of years
Tides have turned from booze to tears
And in spite of the weather
We could learn to make it together

The youth is starting to change
Are you starting to change?
Are you?
Together

The youth…

100 Ways to Make the World a Better Place #86: Read.

A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon, with the help of swiss-miss, an interview with a man who read one book, every week, for a year. You can of course read the interview, in its brief entirety here. Inaki Escudero, the designer who read 52 books in 2009, closes with this point of wisdom:

Looking back, I have collected lots and lots of intelligent quotes, everyday wisdom and insightful observations, but one comes to mind that relates to this: if you don’t use your ability to read, then it’s as if you couldn’t read.

I know we don’t see it as a privilege anymore, but if I’m able to read, why not put it to practice?

That said, it got me thinking about my interest for reading but my general lack of it as of the last couple years. I used to blame it on the schooling system, for requiring reading that was bland, and I guess to some extent I think people are turned off from reading at an early age, because put simply, a lot of the books I read in middle school and even high school just plain sucked. Once I realized that though, it allowed me to move on. I’m going to college next year, wherever that may be geographically, and I would like to read more.

For one, I see it as an opportunity to embrace our opportunities for solitude, many of which are far and few between, and to realize that it’s okay to be alone. Well, that’s something you think about before you even crack open a book. You’ve heard it many times, and there is no point in reiterating the fact that books have a wealth of knowledge stored within their pages, which is exactly why I am creating my own list of books to ‘check out’ (who knew it could be used in both meanings of the word), and I’d like to read 52 books in 2010. Perhaps I’ll document my journey here.

Want to create your own list? Make sure to check out this extraordinary MetaFilter thread, and the interview with Inaki Escudero.

Much Love, and Much Reading,

Chris

The Internet Symphony

A few months ago YouTube announced that they were going to create an Internet Symphony Orchestra, in plain English: an orchestra that is made up of fervent (musical) YouTubers. Composer Tan Dun wrote a composition for a huge variety of instruments and lots of people around the globe started to send in their submissions (in the form of a YouTube video).

The aim of the whole project is to pick out the best musicians and invite them for a true, physical performance. But that’s not what I’m going to talk about here, what caught my attention is the mashup that was made by the people from YouTube.

The mashup features material from the thousands and thousands of submissions that have been mixed together in a nice blend. Isn’t it wonderful how the internet connects everyone of us? In this video there are possibly a few hundred people making music together while they have never actually met each other.

Way to go for the Internet Symphony Orchestra, woohoo!
