SuperForester Hidde Presents: Utrecht, Cycling City!

Dear SuperForest,

First of all we would like to say that you are all awesome and that we absolutely love SuperForest! It’s our daily dose of positivity and I think it’s safe to say that you all have been responsible for countless smiles on our faces. The fact that we can now contribute our little piece to this awesome blog is also worth a big, fat smile.

A few months ago SuperForester Carla wrote a blog post about our hometown Utrecht. She was amazed by how much of the traffic here consists out of people on bicycles. Because we live here, we were never that amazed by it; We took it for granted. But that blog post by Carla made us realize that it is, of course, absolutely amazing! In her blog post, Carla wondered if someone maybe could make a video-tour of the city. Well, we thought it would be very cool to do that and so we did!

What we did is shoot a lot of footage of our hometown and put it all together, to (hopefully) give all of you a good impression of Utrecht and the magnitude of the bicycle activity over here.

Some background information: In Utrecht 33 % of all travels is done by bicycle. So wherever you look, you’re bound to see a bicycle or two. The cool thing is that the infrastructure in Utrecht (and most other cities in the Netherlands too, by the way) is build around this fact. There are a lot (and I mean a lot) of roads especially for bicycles. You can basically get everywhere by bike, with relative ease and in safety. To go even further, some places/streets in Utrecht are barely accessible by car. For instance, the core/center of Utrecht (where the shopping streets are) can’t be reached by car. The only road that goes through this part of the city consists out of bicycle and bus lanes.

We hope you’ll enjoy. Keep doing what you’re doing, SuperForest! You’re great!

Much love,

Marco, Stefan & Hidde

Morning Rush Hour: Bike Edition!

Morning, SuperForest!

The following video was taken on an ordinary Wednesday morning in Utrecht, the fourth largest city of the Netherlands. Taken at around 8:30 in the morning, this video answers the question of what rush hour traffic looks like in a city where 33% of ALL transportation around the city is performed through the use of bicycles.

Amazing! Big cheers to Utrecht for leading by example. It kind of makes me wonder if SuperForester Julius would be down with venturing over there and giving us a video tour…must ask!

For more Utrecht bike action, you can check out the second part to this video (the 5:30 PM edition), by clicking here.

Love,
