The other day, I learned of a project called Urban Camouflage, in which the participants create a costume intended to help them literally blend into their urban surroundings. Then, they casually stroll into their commercial canvas (without any permission) and do their thing.
After getting past the comedic nature of the experiment and the craftsmanship of the costume, I found myself kind of disappointed with the reactions of the customers. If I saw something like that moving around, my initial thought would probably be to jump on it (weird, I know, but that’s the truth). Instead, most of the customers showed absolutely no emotion and seemed uninterested in what was happening before them. I thought it could just be the particular footage that we were watching but the actual Urban Camouflage website confirms that a lot of people just ignored them all together!
This got me thinking, are we as a modern human species becoming so wrapped up in our individual concerns that we are becoming numb to our environments? I sure hope not. I mean, the planet is literally our playground to explore and we are on it for such a finite amount of time, we can’t just ignore obscure stuff when we encounter them. Don’t be like those customers. Do me a favor. If you see a person in a rad colorful suit with chameleonic qualities, go up and do something. Talk to it, hug it, poke it, ask questions…ANYTHING! I’m sure you won’t regret it. Arnold Edinborough once said,
“Curiosity is the very basis of education and if you tell me that curiosity killed the cat, I say only the cat died nobly.”
