Jonathan Harris – The Whale Hunt

picture-51

In May of 2007, Jonathan Harris traveled from New York to Barrow, Alaska to live with a family of Inupiat Eskimos and record their yearly whale hunt. The rules he set for himself included taking at least one photograph every five minutes, even while sleeping.

He then created a program to display all of the images he took, in the form of a heartbeat, which mirrors the amount of photographs taken within a five minute block. If he was sleeping, visually that would translate to a slow, steady heartbeat. But when the family hauls the whale from the water, and his shooting rate climbs, so does the heartbeat.

One can also use Jonathan’s program to interact with the photos in a variety of ways, following one character or object throughout the experience.

Jonathan’s use of technology in exploring the boundaries of storytelling totally amazes me.
