MNN’s “40 Farmers Under 40″: Congratulations, SuperForesters Severine and Jason!!!

Dear SuperForest,

Mother Nature Network just released a fabulous article of farmers under the age of 40. The article highlights that though studies show that the current numbers of young farmers (18-35 years of age) are declining, there is no doubting the fact that they are growing in visibility. This is a new generation of farmers that is shattering all the previous stereotypes we may have had of farmers and farming. For the most part, these individuals are urban, have advanced degrees, are female, and come from varied backgrounds and live different lifestyles. But the most exciting part of all of this is that each of these notable farmers has a deep focus on sustainability and community building. They are bridging the gap between the old agrarian lifestyle of the past, and the fast paced urban lifestyle of the present/future and they are showing us how compatible those lifestyles can be.

Also included in this article was a great list of 40 of these fab farmers. The list showcased a wide range of incredible human beings and while much can and should be said about each and every one of these young farmers, it was brought to our attention that two special friends of SuperForest were recognized on this list!

First, at number 40 we have filmmaker/farmer Severine von Tscharner Fleming! Our very own, SuperForester Severine!

SuperForester Severine

Though I have not personally had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Severine, I have learned a lot about her through SuperForest. Beginning with her work on the Greenhorns to her genius concept of bio bling, there is no denying the fact that this lady is pure magic. One only has to read of her to understand the amazing impact she’s having on this planet. So when I saw she was featured on this list, I was overjoyed!

Congratulations, Severine! Keep up the great work, we’re all rooting (pun) for you here at SuperForest.

Second, topping the list of young farmers under 40 is another friend of SuperForest, the marvelous Mr. Jason Mraz! Hooray, Jason!

There are many accomplishments and recognitions Mr. Mraz deserves to be acknowledged for, but personally, I feel this one is extra special because it shows just how versatile this artist is. The enthusiasm he’s displayed countless times for avocado farming (and avocados in general) is truly infectious and seeing that enthusiasm ripple outwards is a wonderful thing to behold!

On behalf of everyone here at SuperForest, thank you, Severine and thank you, Jason for being at the forefront of promoting sustainable living and the peace loving lifestyle we esteem here at SuperForest!

So there you have it , on a list of 40 young farmers, we know numbers 1 and 40. I cannot wait for us to befriend all the beautiful farmers in between.

Have an excellent day!

P.S. A special thank you goes out to SuperForester Bill for letting us know about this!

The Greenhorns

In keeping with today’s topic of young farmers, we proudly present the trailer to the upcoming documentary “The Greenhorns”

The Greenhorns chronicles the trials and successes of young farmers all over the US.

The film’s director Severine Von Tscharner Fleming, has this to say about the film:

“We are making a film about young farmers, their struggle and their valor.
The redemptive force that they have, for our society.
For our culture.
For our agriculture.
For our countryside.
For our nation…”

Beautiful, inspiring, hopeful.

These are great times we are living in, my friends. Seems that starting a farm is the new starting a band.

Here is their website where you can watch the trailer much larger, learn more about the film crew, donate to help them get the word of the film out, and nominate local farmers to be featured in the doc: theGreenhorns.net
