Inspiring Quote: “…the greatest time to be alive.”

I think I first learned about Patton Oswalt right here on SuperForest when Jackson posted his speech to a class of graduating high school students. And after later becoming a fan of his comedy, I’ve always appreciated him for his wit and wisdom. Because it seems like the more I read about or listen to Patton Oswalt, the more I come to realize how much of a genius he really is. The following is a quote from an interview of his for GQ, you’ll see exactly what I mean:

“I think a lot of the problems we’ve been experiencing come from the fact that no one embraces the miracle and amazement of the present. So many people—steampunks, fundamentalists, hippies, neocons, anti-immigration advocates—feel like there was a better time to live in. They think the present is degraded, faded, and drab. That our world has lost some sort of “spark” or “basic value system” that, if you so much as skim history, you’ll find was never there. Even during the time of the Greeks, there were masses of people lamenting the passing of some sort of “golden age.” But I’d never go back and live in any other time than teetering on tomorrow; this is the greatest time to be alive.”

I love this! And being one of those people that could never really decide when asked the popular question, “If you could live in any time period other than your own, what would it be?”, I felt doubly appreciative toward this quote.

These are the “Good Old Days”, because when it comes down to it, they’re all we’ve got.

Yours in celebration,
Carla
