One of my all-time favorite albums has to be Van Morrison’s brilliant 1968 solo debut: ASTRAL WEEKS. It’s a vibrant, lush stream of conciousness that trancends words, or any of it’s individual parts, to create something less tangible and more real. An atmosphere, an impressionistic vision of beauty, passion, love, joy. Every-time I listen to it I feel as though someone has reconnected my umbilical cord back to the divine. Every song is great, but my personal favorite is “Sweet Thing”.
I recently had the pleasure of seeing Van perform the entire Astral Weeks album live (for the first time in 40 years), at the Hollywood Bowl. It was beautiful. Still nothing quite captures the original recording which you can listen to and buy here.
Few things in life can instantly put me in a better mood than this album and last week’s Song of the Week. Enjoy!
