SuperForester Christine Celebrates Her Dietz Lantern for Earth Day!

picture-61

Happy, lovely, magical Earth Day, y’all!

Recently I bought a pair of Dietz Lil’ Wizard lanterns from the incredible Lehman’s catalog. I bought two so that I could give one away as a gift, which I promptly did, to SuperForester Christine.

Well, the incandescent Ms. Norrie has written a lovely Earth Day post extolling the quiet loveliness of her lantern and the warm, cozy glow it can make.

Life is hectic and busy, so to spend an hour or two in the dark, with only a lantern to glow up a space is practically therapy.

Read Christine’s lovely post here.
And here is my post about getting the lanterns in the first place.
And here is a link to the handy-as-all-get-out Lehman’s catalog, which I adore.

Get yourself a lantern or two, you won’t regret it.

Happy Earth Day!

Christine @ work

This here is Christine Norrie, who is a rather excellent person and one definitely worth knowing.

I was lucky enough to make Christine’s acquaintance several years ago, when SuperForester Andrew asked her to use her prodigious gifts as an artist to mock up some storyboards.

When I moved to New York in March of 2007 and SuperForest was gearing up development as a children’s show, Christine came back into my life and we spent several happy months drawing and collaborating on some wonderful things that sadly might never see the light of day… But such is the development process.

Since that time, Christine and I have gotten to collaborate on many things, one of which we are getting set to introduce shortly, a brand new entry into the world of SuperForest Comics, our very own SuperForest SuperHero: Obaman!

(Basically, we’re saying that Obama probably has some pretty powerful magic powers and thankfully he uses them for good.)

Stay tuned for the thrilling first issue!

What really makes Christine special is her incredible ability to spread thoughtfulness and compassion to everything that does. Everything this woman touches turns to goodness. She once told me a story about her daughter’s first day of school: How as the little girl walked down the stairs of her apartment building, one by one, doors opened and Christine’s neighbors appeared on their stoops to wish Josie a successful first day.

Perhaps this is how it works for everyone in Christine’s building, like it’s some magical love hive in the West Village, but I suspect it’s that Christine has simply done what she does best: spread the love. Spread the compassion. Spread the SuperForest. She made hand-drawn signs illustrating how the recycling system worked in her building and posted them up. When they were torn down, she redrew them and re-posted them. Her positivity and creativity are relentless and a joy to behold.

During the election, I would visit Spookoo in times of emotional turmoil and seeing the quality Pro-Bama work that Christine was doing never failed to both cheer me, and inspire me to post more, post better, post smarter.

Miss Norrie is a beacon of hope and talent, and I consider myself extremely lucky to call Christine my friend.

This rampagin’ track is a special shout out to the incandescent SuperForester Christine, who celebrated her birthday yesterday.

Happy Birthday, Christine!

Back From Qatar!

Hello SuperForest!!!!

Oh man, the United States is an amazing place to return to.

Qatar was an incredible adventure!

SuperForesters Andrew, Nicholas, and myself worked liked wildmen. We were up with the sun every morning, hauling photo gear from place to place under the merciless Qatari sun. Multiple photoshoots every day, work until sundown, download cards, and clean and organize gear, repeat.

The work was hard, but the adventure was as rich as a mousse.

You know those trips where you know at the end of it you’ll look back on the experience as one of the highlights of your life? This was one of them.

The gig was in the middle of nowhere, with a huge dessert across the road and the lights of Doha on the horizon. That dessert was absolutely tantalizing to me. I felt absolutely that to not spend at least one night in it would be criminal. But I was a bit afraid…

Then, on the second to last day, I got an email from the incandescent SuperForester Christine. It is a quote from the actor Sterling Hayden, (who is soo excellent in Dr. Strangelove.)

Here it is:

“To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise, you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen who play with their boats at sea… cruising, it is called. Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about.

“I’ve always wanted to sail to the south seas, but I can’t afford it.”

What these men can’t afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of security. And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine – and before we know it our lives are gone. What does a man need – really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in – and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That’s all – in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade. The years thunder by, the dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed. Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?”

– Sterling Hayden

I’m not so sure about the need for financial unrest, but the need to not settle for security rang very true for me.

So, the second to last night I was in Qatar, I borrowed a sleeping pad, jumped into one of the Land Cruisers and drove into the darkness of the Qatari dessert.

I drove until the lights of our building were quite small on the horizon, stopping to pick up a load of dry branches from dying dessert brush.

Soon all was dark. Only the moon and the lights of Doha.

I dragged a few rocks into a circle and within built a fire, teepee style, like the boyscouts recommend. To protect myself from dessert carnivores, I did a hilarious side-shuffle dance in a big circle around my fire and bedroll, peeing as I went. It is good to let the desserts full-time citizens know that you are there. I was merely saying, chemically: “I’ll be in this little circle. You can have the rest.”

Then, wrapped up tight in my blankets to keep out the cold, with the moon and stars above me and my fire at my back, I called my father and brother to tell them that I loved them and that all was well. It’s a trip to have full bars in the middle of nowhere.

Here’s what it looked like:

The next morning:

Adventure is the spice of life. Get it when you can.

So glad to be back! Stay tuned for more info!

Love to you all,

SuperForester Jackson

Ask SuperForest: Christine’s Question!

Good Morning SuperForest!

We’ve just received a question from SuperForester Christine:

“Dear SuperForest,

Hello! How are you? I love your blog!

So, I’ve got a bit of a dilemma and hope you can help. I’m a busy working single mom who is in need of streamlining my dining. I’m a dutiful recycler and re-user, but am finding that I’d like to eliminate the need for that by simply using smarter products. So, I’m in search of something that can allow me to store food in batches that can be easily reheated. Here’s wherein my challenge lies because I’d like in this food container:

1) no plastic, I’m tired of so much of it around

2) lightweight, for on the go

3) varied sizes, for different yummy things

4) freezer-capable, to use later

5) oven-capable, I don’t own a microwave

I reuse my plastic take-out containers, but then have to scoop that food into oven-ready dishes, then serve onto our dish ware, and that’s just a lot of dishes and wasted energy! My poor hands! Anyway, my desire is to be able to cook and prepare nice healthy foods for myself and my daughter, which I can then store (be it a couple days or weeks), pop in the oven, serve or sometimes eat from, then wash and repeat!

Hope you can help!

PS. Is it also too much to ask that it be designed nicely as well?”

Christine!

Thank you for your question. I’m sure that by now a lot of folks have heard about the potential for plastic packaging to introduce some interesting chemicals into ones body, and are wondering about the safety of their food storage containers.

We think we have an elegant, long lasting, and beautifully designed solution:

Sanctus Mundo
is a Korean company that makes a wide variety of glass and stainless steel food containers. Yes, they are manufactured and shipped from Korea, but once here, they will last a long time and mitigate the use of many plastic containers.

Here’s the pdf of the entire line.

Sanctus Mundo’s products are imported by lifewithoutplastic.com and are available through their website.

Christine Norrie’s Peace Alphabet!

Wow!

SuperForester Christine has been inspired by the Peace Alphabet series and is now doing her very own!

Amazing! Just think of what could be accomplished for Peace branding if a number of artists all made 26 attempts at visualizing Peace.

This is just so wonderful, we don’t know what to do with ourselves!

Here are her first three letters:

“B” is for Peace.

“H” is for Peace.

“W” is for Peace.

Christine has done such a marvelous job on these. She’s really captured something wonderful about Peace, namely: it is sexy as hell.

Peace is sexy. Let’s all work together to increase the sexy.

Awesome job, Christine!

Love to All,

Team SuperForest
