SuperForest Layout Updates (7/13/10): “SuperForest Store” and “Friends” Buttons!

Good morning, SuperForest!

As most of you have probably noticed, posting has been a bit slow lately. You’ll have to forgive us, in attempting to make the changes over to the new website design as quick as possible, it’s taken time away from regular writing. But the good news is, we’ve been making tons of progress. You’ll find a couple new buttons have begun to appear on the site. First, is our button to the SuperForest Skreened shop. Generally speaking, Skreened is a pretty incredible T-shirt printing company. Everything from their materials to their production methods are a part of what they call “ethical custom apparel”. This, paired with t-shirt designs from our very own SuperForesters Iman, Jackson, and Patricia make for a wicked combo. Apart from this, you’ll also notice a new “SuperForest Friends” page! Here, you’ll find links and information on the wonderful people, organizations, and websites that we work with. All of which are definitely worth checking out and I could never praise enough.

Next up, is the “Projects” page that will be full of opportunities for you SuperForesters to get involved and lastly, Iman’s updating the portraits that are lined up on the right column of your screen.

Lots of exciting developments! Fingers crossed and we’ll be finished by Friday (and posting will go back to normal).

Love to you all, hope you are having a splendid Tuesday!

SuperForest Update (7/5/10): Brand New About Page Button!

Good Morning, SuperForest!

If you have the eyes of a hawk, you may have noticed that our layout has been shifting around lately. This is all a part of the grand site redesign and renovations SuperForester Iman has been working on this Summer. Most notably, you might’ve noticed a shiny new button on our right column titled “About Us”.  Clicking on this button will lead you to SuperForest’s about page, something that has existed for several months, but whose existence hasn’t yet been formally announced (I don’t think).

So here it is. SuperForest now has an about page! Curiously enough, creating this page was probably one of the most difficult challenges we’ve ever faced as a website. Defining something as fluid and complex as SuperForest was something we weren’t going to take lightly. In fact, I also went through quite sometime debating whether defining SuperForest was even SuperForesty in the first place. In the end, this is what we came up with and I highly recommend you give it a read (I mean, after all, it was a couple years in the making.)

There, you will find a description of the team, a description of SuperForest’s mission and philosophy, explanations for all of our SuperForest categories (build, zeitgeist, food, etc.), and finally, ways for you SuperForesters to get involved. Basically, everything an about page is supposed to do. :)

Lots more changes/updates to come, we’ll be sure to keep you in the know. And if you have any suggestions or comments on improvement, we are always ready to read them.

Yours in growth, learning, and adaptation,

Team SuperForest

SuperForest Update (6/8/10): Summertime Goodness Ahead

Sweetest SuperForest,

It’s been about six days since I last posted and I can honestly say that it’s felt more like six months. (I guess it’s only normal when you’re away from a community that you love very much.) I’ve spent the last several days studying for my final examinations and today, I can finally say that I’ve finished school (the hyperlink is obligatory). It’s an interesting time, once you graduate from college the pathways one takes in life get a lot more ambiguous leaving you with less and less options other than creating your own path in life. Ahead of me, lies a blank canvas and I’ve never felt so anxious/excited/scared out of my mind.

There are a few things I am sure of, however, and one of them is that this Summer is going to be absolutely amazing for SuperForest. Apart from the regular posting by our excellent SuperForesters, SuperForester Iman is going to continue the site redesign and give us a beautiful and cohesive new look, I’m excited to bring you guys a SuperForest Fresh Picks video series, and we’re going to start organizing SuperForest Street Team missions for interested SuperForesters to get more involved in site projects and activities. I’m thinking we could even give a stab at our very own Socialtaire World Cup…(?)

The ideas are plentiful, the opportunities are everywhere, and together, we’ll paint on that blank canvas the most beautiful story the world has ever known.

Anyway, just wanted give you wonderful folks a quick update. Stay tuned, check back for more, and as always, never hesitate to give us feedback and thoughts (via email or facebook).

Cheers,
Carla

Carla’s Journal (1/23/09): Meet Me at the Collabosphere.

Painting by Katsumi Hayakawa (Tokyo, 1970)

Dear SuperForesters,

Throughout the years, I’ve read a lot of things about the internet (both nice and nasty), but no words better describe my feelings toward it than this quote right here:

This waking dream we call the Internet also blurs the difference between my serious thoughts and my playful thoughts, or to put it more simply: I no longer can tell when I am working and when I am playing online. For some people the disintegration between these two realms marks all that is wrong with the Internet: It is the high-priced waster of time. It breeds trifles. On the contrary, I cherish a good wasting of time as a necessary precondition for creativity, but more importantly I believe the conflation of play and work, of thinking hard and thinking playfully, is one the greatest things the Internet has done. -Kevin Kelly

After first reading this a few months ago, the words stayed with me and it was during a meeting with the lovely Janice Pezzoli today that I was reminded of the internet’s other great gift. The “creativity” that Kelly talks about fuels one of the most incredible forms of collaboration possible. Ideas are born, shared, remixed, grown, expanded, and so on creating this insane cycle called progress (at least, some people think so). Being so, the internet, at its essence, is a collabosphere. It’s one of the most beautiful tools we have at our disposal and taking the treasures born in it and manifesting them in real world situations is exactly what the SuperForest Game is all about.

The SuperForesty ideas are still buzzing and we are trying to process all the exciting happenings that are going on and convert those into plans (Our 90% estimate of the number of untold “behind the scenes stuff” was no understatement) but we look forward to sharing it with you all soon and having you join in on this crazy game.

In gratitude and excitement,
SuperForester Carla
