SuperForester Christine Celebrates Her Dietz Lantern for Earth Day!

picture-61

Happy, lovely, magical Earth Day, y’all!

Recently I bought a pair of Dietz Lil’ Wizard lanterns from the incredible Lehman’s catalog. I bought two so that I could give one away as a gift, which I promptly did, to SuperForester Christine.

Well, the incandescent Ms. Norrie has written a lovely Earth Day post extolling the quiet loveliness of her lantern and the warm, cozy glow it can make.

Life is hectic and busy, so to spend an hour or two in the dark, with only a lantern to glow up a space is practically therapy.

Read Christine’s lovely post here.
And here is my post about getting the lanterns in the first place.
And here is a link to the handy-as-all-get-out Lehman’s catalog, which I adore.

Get yourself a lantern or two, you won’t regret it.

Happy Earth Day!

A Brief Word From SuperForester Jackson

picture-9

Good Morning SuperForest!

Jackson here.

New and exciting things are afoot in SuperForest, and I wanna tell you all about them…

This is 2009, a brand new year, the third year of SuperForest’s existence. At the end of last year, an important decision was made…

We at SuperForest are going to concentrate less on reporting news, and work more towards making the news.

We want to make sure that when you visit SF, you’re welcomed into a world of humor, elevating content, and original thought. In 2009 we’re trying to stress original.

This means that we’ll be concentrating on more regular posts, (like Julius’s Art and Sci-Tech columns,) more D.I.Y. (like Iman’s little rice sack that could,) and more original SuperForest videos, interviews, and entertainments.

Personally, what this decision means for me is that I am going to combine my personal life with my SuperForest persona, as in, I’m really going to try to become SuperForester Jackson, and live in a way that is as SuperForesty as possible.

To live a life of giddy sustainability, and to make media about it, to document it in the hopes of showing as many people how much fun we are going to have rebuilding and rehabilitating our society in the aftermath of the “Petroleum Age.” That is the goal.

(As in, we don’t have to wait until everything collapses to start rebuilding. AND we can have loads of sexy fun as we take up the glorious burden.)

This means that I am now in talks with a group of friends to create an internet show about sustainable co-housing (thank you, Jaell). With the ultimate goal of showing you SuperForesters at home what it is like to try to live sustainably in a big city like New York, while simultaneously building a supportive community. Can it be done? What are the pitfalls? What actions will help such a venture succeed? Has it been done in the past?

We’re going to find out! And you get to watch!

So, I’m going to try by the beginning of next year to be moving into a house or community with a group of like minded individuals, and we will make a reality show for the internet about our endeavors. Our hope is to try to find a cure for unwanted isolation by exploring the balance of public and private modern green living. But green it shall be!

Just think of it… A Harlem brownstone with a green roof, and water catchers, gardens, chickens, laughter, all smack in the center of Manhattan.

Can it happen? Stick around and find out.

Asides from the “Our House” project, SuperForester Carla and I are planning a series of posts about Islam that will hopefully communicate the similarities between us all, in the hopes of spreading both curiosity and greater understanding. SuperForest is also busily trying to keep the momentum going on the potential cultural exchange trip to Iran. Fingers crossed.

What else do we have on the burner?

A children’s book! “Henners the Seal” is a book for kids about a young seal who finds peace. Carla and I are writing that as well.

Christine Norrie and I are busy at work on more SuperForest Comics!

We’re building micro-sites for Socialtaire, the Peace Alphabet, and the Save-A-Seed Coalition. The idea being that SuperForest will be like a tomato plant growing out of a well-seasoned compost heap. The tomatoes will be the micro-sites.

We figure that since SuperForest is all about ideas, and free ones at that, we’ll stick to what we do best and generate more ideas. We’ll leave the making of things to those that wish to make them.

We’ve just got the transcript back from the Josh Tickell interview and that will be going up shortly.

There is an awful lot going on. Please forgive the sporadic posting. It’s not from lack of interest, it’s just that so much is cooking right now.

And…. we’ve got exciting news from the Millennium Seed Bank! But I’ll save it for the next post…

If you’ve enjoyed SuperForest in the past, I think you’ll love the renewed approach.

Love to All.

Yours,

-Jackson

Christine @ work

This here is Christine Norrie, who is a rather excellent person and one definitely worth knowing.

I was lucky enough to make Christine’s acquaintance several years ago, when SuperForester Andrew asked her to use her prodigious gifts as an artist to mock up some storyboards.

When I moved to New York in March of 2007 and SuperForest was gearing up development as a children’s show, Christine came back into my life and we spent several happy months drawing and collaborating on some wonderful things that sadly might never see the light of day… But such is the development process.

Since that time, Christine and I have gotten to collaborate on many things, one of which we are getting set to introduce shortly, a brand new entry into the world of SuperForest Comics, our very own SuperForest SuperHero: Obaman!

(Basically, we’re saying that Obama probably has some pretty powerful magic powers and thankfully he uses them for good.)

Stay tuned for the thrilling first issue!

What really makes Christine special is her incredible ability to spread thoughtfulness and compassion to everything that does. Everything this woman touches turns to goodness. She once told me a story about her daughter’s first day of school: How as the little girl walked down the stairs of her apartment building, one by one, doors opened and Christine’s neighbors appeared on their stoops to wish Josie a successful first day.

Perhaps this is how it works for everyone in Christine’s building, like it’s some magical love hive in the West Village, but I suspect it’s that Christine has simply done what she does best: spread the love. Spread the compassion. Spread the SuperForest. She made hand-drawn signs illustrating how the recycling system worked in her building and posted them up. When they were torn down, she redrew them and re-posted them. Her positivity and creativity are relentless and a joy to behold.

During the election, I would visit Spookoo in times of emotional turmoil and seeing the quality Pro-Bama work that Christine was doing never failed to both cheer me, and inspire me to post more, post better, post smarter.

Miss Norrie is a beacon of hope and talent, and I consider myself extremely lucky to call Christine my friend.

Althea & Donna – “Uptown Top Ranking”

This here is the new fave jam. Althea & Donna getting it done in 1977! (I was negative one.)

This rampagin’ track is a special shout out to the incandescent SuperForester Christine, who celebrated her birthday yesterday.

Happy Birthday, Christine!

Love from SuperForest!

Artists for Obama

The incredibly talented Christine Norrie whipped this sweet baby up!

If you like this image and want to tell her how good it is, or what an amazing woman she is, why not do just that. Emails, images and more await you at Spookoo.

Christine Norrie’s Peace Alphabet!

Wow!

SuperForester Christine has been inspired by the Peace Alphabet series and is now doing her very own!

Amazing! Just think of what could be accomplished for Peace branding if a number of artists all made 26 attempts at visualizing Peace.

This is just so wonderful, we don’t know what to do with ourselves!

Here are her first three letters:

“B” is for Peace.

“H” is for Peace.

“W” is for Peace.

Christine has done such a marvelous job on these. She’s really captured something wonderful about Peace, namely: it is sexy as hell.

Peace is sexy. Let’s all work together to increase the sexy.

Awesome job, Christine!

Love to All,

Team SuperForest

Giant Mechanical Elephant!

I don’t know how, I don’t know why. I don’t care, I love it!

In Nantes, France.

“The Machines of Ile de Nantes are located in the former shipyard, and will open to the public in July 2007. The Machine Gallery is both a laboratory and an exhibition hall where the artist-machinists tell the story and bring to life the fabulous dream machines . The Giant Elephant weighing 40 tons and measuring 12 metres high, it can carry up to 30 passengers for trips along the river and in the town. The Workshop is where the Machines are created. This is the dream factory where, from the gangway, you’ll see them come to life right before your very eyes.”

Oh man… I’d love a ride on this wonderful creation.

Pure inspiration.

They’ve got some great “making of” photos here, (under “sa construction”): nantes.fr

Here’s a cool movie of the Elephant in action, from Googlevideo:

Many thanks to the luminous Christine Norrie for bringing the beast to my attention. Check out Christine’s amazing art at:
