SF Journal: Kinship with all Life

Do you ever wake up in the morning with a thought ringing out like a loud clear bell?  Here was mine today:

“Somewhere in the world right now, a man is calling a shark to his canoe”.

Actually I first woke up with the nebulous weight of the work I have to do today.  An intense day of deadlines pressing in before conciousness — an abstract sense of stress.  And then the thought like a bell.  A man in a canoe.

Why it should be this or anything, I cannot say.  But instantly I found myself filled with a sudden deep sense of wonder.  The notion that I had tapped into the deep well of human mythology in my half-sleep state.  The instant understanding that in any given moment, no matter what stresses  I feel, no matter what challenges or experiences my day may hold… somewhere around the world millions of people are experiencing profound, life-moving, deeply simple, beautiful, devestating, inspiring, powerful things.

Over 6 billion stories being told at once.  6 billion threads in the great tapestry of Planet Earth.  And that’s not even considering the shark.  Or the 60 billion other forms of life breathing, living, dying, loving right now.

And though the specific task of my day remains, it is somehow lessened.  And as my burden grows smaller, I do not feel the same.  Somewhere in there for me lies the whisper of PEACE.  No matter what you find yourself facing as you throw yourself into the world today, know that you are not alone.  Somewhere  a mile off a tropic island in water the color of jade, a man summons his ancestor to his dugout canoe with a bracelet of shells… and thinks of you.
