SuperForest Calendar (1/19/11) : Free Donavon Frankenreiter and Seth Pettersen Benefit Show!

Good morning, SuperForest!

The Love Hope Strength Foundation is an international, music-centric cancer charity dedicated to saving lives “one concert at a time”. It uses its funds to do things like establish cancer awareness across the globe and build and support cancer centers across the globe. Needless to say, it’s a pretty incredible foundation and I was thrilled to see that our good friends Seth Pettersen and Trevor Beld would be playing in a benefit show for them along with Donavon Frankenreiter!

We’ve promoted a few other benefit concerts here on SuperForest in the past but this one really stands out to me for a simple reason: it’s cause is personal. Though highly unfortunate, we live in a day and age where I can safely say that cancer is something that has had an impact on our lives in one way or another. And to see people like Donavon and Seth and friends put out an effort to help this worthwhile cause not only fills me with hope, but extreme gratitude as well.

Here’s the facebook event page. If any of you SuperForesters can make it and would even like to cover the event for us by means of a guest post on SuperForest, definitely shoot us an email and we’ll make it happen!

Thanks in advance to any of you in the area who are able to make it! And a huge thank you goes out to everyone that made this benefit concert possible.

Love,
Carla

Carla’s Journal (9/15/10) – “Solutions to Celebrate”: The Post-Event Reflection!

Good Afternoon, SuperForest!

A couple days ago, I had the pleasure of informing you about the Global ARC’s very first “Solutions to Celebrate” event, something SuperForesters Janice, Keith, Maureen, and I have been planning all Summer. I wrote that post the morning of the event, completely unaware of how it would turn out, but only expecting the very best.

To my extreme happiness, “the best” is pretty much the most appropriate description for how the night would turn out. SuperForesters Iman and I drove down to the UCSD campus a few hours early to help set up. There, we met with SuperForesters Alex, Austin, Brett, and Maureen and soon-after headed up toward the plaza where the event would take place.

Almost immediately, the flurry of action began. We started setting up the tables to prepare for the booths, organized chairs and tables, and even set up the sound system to prepare for the band’s arrival. Iman and Nika would take over the SuperForest booth as Maureen and I would receive and sign in all the guests.

The rest of the evening seemed to whirl by at lightening speed, but amidst the chaos, I felt completely at peace. Friends, relatives, and visitors all came together to celebrate a journey that was months and months in the making. We shared a meal, smiles, stories, and even “ice-breaker tags” that all read the same question: “what makes you happy?” And while most of the people that joined us that evening were strangers, I can honestly say we all left there as friends, united in our decision to view the world as a place full of bounty and potential.

And, of course, we were all united through music. I may be a bit biased, but the last part of the evening, was definitely my favorite. After all the inspirational words of wisdom were shared, SuperForesters Iman and Mo took the stage (as pictured above) and introduced the two performers that would be playing for us that evening, Seth Pettersen and Tall Tales. We met Seth and Trev at Lou’s Records a few months ago along with their manager, Tim, and were able to catch a very impromptu interview with them after their performance there, but on Sunday, we were able to spend a little more time with them and understand how kind and how genuine these gentleman really are. Put simply, their music is rad, they are rad, and if you haven’t done so by now, you definitely owe it to yourself to check both Seth Pettersen and Tall Tales out.

To give you a little taste, here is a playlist of what we were able to catch of the concert part of the event on Sunday. In it, you’ll find a heart-warming husband-wife duet, a really good Morrissey cover, and the last video even shows a tiny bit of the dance party that started up at the very end.

And to flip through more of the pictures, you’ll find an entire flickr set, here!

A big thank you to everyone that helped make this event the success it was, and another big thank you to all of you at home that kept up with this project and sent us all your well wishes and happy thoughts.

Love,
Carla

SuperForest Calendar (8/7/2010): Seth Pettersen @ Long Beach’s “Shelter” Surf Shop

SuperForesters,

If you are in the Southern California area, are looking for something fun to do this weekend, and are at least 21 years of age, you are totally in luck. This Saturday, our buddy Seth Pettersen is going to be teaming up with the Aquarium of the Pacific‘s “Seafood for the Future” program and the American Institute of Wine and Food to bring us a night of awareness to the importance of our oceans, excellent food, and surf culture. A pretty mighty combination, don’t you think?

Here’s how it’ll go down. At 6PM, the food will be served.

Jumpstarting the guests’ palates for an evening of food for thought, a trio of creative salsas will be served with chips. Then, between bites of bright, citrusy and refreshing ceviche on crunchy fried corn tortillas, Chef Andrew Gruel and Marine Biologist Dave Anderson of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Seafood for the Future will marry culinary creations and scientific facts to educate guests about the impacts that our seafood choices have on the oceans. Finally, local and fresh grilled Mahi Mahi tacos drizzled with a Baja style cream sauce will be served with ice cold cerveza.

At 8PM, SuperForester Seth will perform. You’ll probably remember him from Iman’s interview or from the utterly fabulous “Baby Buddha” music video:

And if that wasn’t reason enough to go, they’ll cap the night off with some classic surf films! All in all, a perfect evening and something you definitely don’t want to miss.

Here’re some more of the deets:

“Seafood for the Future”
Saturday, August 7th from 6-10PM
Shelter Surf Shop 2148 E. 4th Street, Long Beach
[UPDATE] The show is FREE and is for ALL ages!!! (Food and beer is by donation only.)

So now you really don’t have an excuse for not going. :)
