Man’s Search for Meaning

While enjoying my final beach day in Hawaii before heading back to the LA shuffle, I blazed through Victor Frankl’s fascinating and famous book “Man’s Search For Meaning”.

Frankl survived 3 years in concentration camps including Auschwitz, during the Holocaust and emerged to pioneer a revolutionary school of psychotherapy called logotherapy.  Which in a nutshell asserts that the most powerful and fundamental motivation in human life is the search for meaning.  It’s a fast and amazing read, but what was even more incredible was receiving a random tip from SuperForester Trina yesterday linking to a rare clip of Frankl delivering a Ted Talks sponsored speech entitled “Why to Believe in Others”. Watch it, it’s only 4 minutes short.

“Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible.  –V. Frankl
