100 Ways to Make the World a Better Place: #90 “Express Yourself!”

A couple months ago, while walking to my car after class, I spotted a man walk past me wearing a really awesome hat. “What an incredible hat!”, I thought to myself as he walked by. But by the time I decided to tell him that, I turned around and he had already disappeared into the crowd. An opportunity lost, but it really got me thinking about how many times I do this throughout the day; think something kind or positive but keep it to myself.  How many times do people in general do this?! As a result, since this “hat man incident”, I’ve tried to make it a point to voice my opinion when I see fit, tell people how much I care about them or appreciate them, and just express myself in general. Ever since, it’s been amazing to witness the power of such a seemingly simple thought and the impact it can have on a person’s day.

Brett Westcott and Cameron Brown have taken this concept to soaring heights with their concept of “Free Compliments”.  I first heard about these two amazing individuals on NPR, where I heard a report on two Purdue University students who would stand outside on Wednesday afternoons and would literally shout compliments to people to boost their day.

“You’re so pretty!”

“I really love your shirt!”

“I like your mustache!”

These are just a few of the thousands of compliments these guys have paid those they come across. According to the self dubbed “Compliment Guys”, they do it simply because it is fun and they consider it a public service. Amazing!

Even more amazing, it appears that since the report I heard in March, Westcott and Brown have teamed up with Kodak and have organized the BrightSide Tour as part of their mission to give as many compliments this summer as possible. For the past several days, they’ve been traveling up the east coast from New Orleans to New York doing what they do best: make those around them feel wonderful about themselves.

Here they are in New York!
