Patricia’s Journal (14/12/09): SFP Salutes SuperForester April, Punctuation and The Incredibility of Modern Life!

Good Evening SuperForest!

Earlier this month the ever awesome SuperForester April introduced us to the Interrobang What a great discovery, non?  Well, I was excited (punctuation is fun! Yay;) and right after I got through interrobanging (must be a verb, right?) my colleagues, friends and members of my immediate family, and naming my imaginary band, I thought what better way to express my general astonishment/excitement at walking through life than in t-shirt form… et le voila:

April found that the interrobang was introduced into some Remington typewriters in 1968, with Remington arguing that the interrobang “expresses modern life’s incredibility.”  I really wanted to have on the back “SuperForest.org – interrobanging modern life’s incredibility” but it proved beyond my novice screen printing skillz.

Thanks Apes – there’s a second one here with your name on it!

The Big Interrobang

Hello SuperForesters,

I love punctuation. It’s awesome! Two of the biggies are exclamation and question marks. And today – say two or three hours ago – I discovered there’s a symbol which combines the two! The interrobang! Not only does it have a cool name, it blends two of the greatest and most popular punctation marks. Yes, ? + ! =

In disbelief, I consulted my trusty dictionary and, by gosh, it was in there: Interrobang - noun a punctuation mark which combines the roles of question and exclamation mark. There have been many instances where I could have used a character like this in my life (ie, He proposed?!; You’re quitting your job?!; You don’t know about SuperForest?!). I can’t find it on my keyboard or in the glyphs section of Microsoft Word, but I suppose we can replicate it in postcards and hand-written letters.

I like it a lot,
April
