The Sunshine State: Keep Shining!

Hey!

Just saw this at the NY Times blog:
“The Sunshine state is starting to live up to its name on the energy front. Today Florida Power & Light, the state’s biggest utility, broke ground on what it says will be the first utility-scale solar investment in the state — and the second-largest of its kind in the country when it is fully turned on in 2010….
This solar thermal plant, which is located on the Atlantic coast just north of Palm Beach County, will consist of 180,000 mirrors, spread over 500 acres. It also matches solar power with an existing combined-cycle natural gas plant, so that when the sun is not shining, the natural gas can take over the work of powering the turbines….
The plant is the first of three solar facilities that F.P.L. is constructing in Florida, which the utility says will make the state the second-largest solar energy producer in the country. California is currently the largest.”

Yay for progress!

Thanks to Florida Power and Light for the image and the NY Times for letting us know!

New Jersey Building Huge Wind Farm!

Great news from the Times. New Jersey is all set to join sister cities Rhode Island and Delaware in the installation of some serious wind turbines! Go East Coast! Get down with your green self!

Read on:

“The proposal by Garden State Offshore Energy includes installing 96 turbines to produce as much as 346 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about tens of thousands of houses. The turbines would be arranged in a rectangle about a half-mile long by one-third of a mile wide.

The selection, which includes access of up to $19 million in state grants, is part of New Jersey’s Energy Master Plan, which calls for 20 percent of the state’s energy to come from renewable sources by 2020.”

We love seeing wind farms sprouting up all over the place like wonderful clean-energy producing mushrooms of goodness.

Congratulations to New Jersey, to Garden State Offshore Energy, and to all the lucky families who will get their power sustainably once the farm is pumping that juice.

Seriously great news.

SuperForester Carla Presents: Keep Us Where The Light Is

Hi Jackson and Fellow SuperForesters!

It’s so nice to be able to share some thoughts with you all. Being my first post, I wanted to make this one about something extra-special. Something that would inspire and uplift. Something that would make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. So I decided when it came to warm and fuzzy, it’s pretty hard for anything to beat the sun. So here it is, my first post of hopefully many more.

The Sun, a star so spectacular that it provides our planet with 126 billion horsepower of energy everyday. If the sun were hollow, you could fit approximately 1 million earths inside of it.

If the Sun were any different to how it is now, life on Earth would not exist. It is the perfect size, perfect age, perfect distance, perfect temperature and perfect brightness for life to exist on a planet like Earth. Apart from those mind blowing facts, the sun also provides us with glorious images. It is often that I wish I can hold on to it just a bit longer before it sets. Kinda like these guys.

Nothing is ever too big for us to grasp. Let your inner light shine forth.

Peace,

Carla

Mother Grain – Quinoa!

For the past year I have enjoyed a glorious love affair with Quinoa.

Pronounced (Keen daddy-O / WAH-aaaaaaaa)

It’s a super grain and it makes me feel super fueled. I like to make it with a cocktail of ¾ veggie stock, ¼ chicken stock, spinach, onions and garlic. YES! I am feeling empowered just talking about it. POWER!

Love the Incas~
