Bread Eating

Hello SF,
Today one of my good friends, SuperForester Yoshi, sent me a copy of a poem I wrote last year and had long forgotten. How exciting!
Writing poetry is food for the soul…and writing poetry about food is just plain delicious. This little composition is about my favorite food: bread…and SuperForest sure is big on bread! (click here!) (and here!) So I figured I’d share it with you. It is modeled after Galway Kinnell’s “Blackberry Eating”. I hope you enjoy:

“Bread Eating”

Never has the jubilant ring of a toaster oven sounded so sweet
The bread pops out of the toaster like a man out of a cannon at some impressive circus.
Its heat rises up towards me
like the sunʼs rays gently falling on my face
spreading their generous warmth and consuming me in memories of a distant summer.
I can smell the brilliant simplicity of what I am about to eat.
Raising it to my mouth, crumbles precede the toast like the opening show of a great concert
or the click-click-click of a roller coaster about to disembark past the nearing climax,
to the thrilling freefall that it implies.
Theres a satisfying crunch as I bite into the rough sandpaper that is almost-burn toast,
its shy, warm-soft interior revealing itself in the private enclosure of my mouth.
The euphoric pleasure of a constant in a constantly changing life

Have a wonderful Sunday and Happy Easter,
-iman
