People We Love: Bushwalla! (and musician friends in general!)

Hello SuperForest!

It’s a beautiful snowy day here in Ottawa, and before I get out there and hit the snowshoe trail, I just wanted to share with you some awesome music!

I am sure many of you know of our friend Bushwalla, but have you all seen his new video? It’s pretty stunning and of course, the song is amazing as well! I think sometimes with all his insanely talented rapping, I forget how good of a singer he is! Go Bushwalla! (And…love the socks.)

Seeing this video reminded me how important it is for all of us to support the creative souls in our lives. Artists, writers, musicians, etc! Their work enhances our lives so much and I think it’s very important to show support. I’m still figuring out the live music scene here in Ottawa, but I thought I’d show support for some of my own personal musician friends whom I had the pleasure of getting to know during my years living in Toronto.

People We Love: Sean “Diddy” Combs

“Whaaaat?”

That’s totally what you are thinking right now, isn’t it? That’s the first thing that sprung to my mind a couple nights ago, too. I was half-asleep when the television was on. Diddy was being interviewed on a late night show about his blog and then he said it, “All day, 24-7, positivity. It’s the most positive blog in the world.”

I wasn’t really sure what to think. Diddy? A positivity blog? I checked it out the next day and the shock I felt the night before was nothing compared to the incredible shock I felt when I opened up the site. It was amazing!

Similar to SuperForest, the premise is this: Much of the internet, especially celebrity-related sites, have gained a reputation for doing much but promote happiness. Diddy Blog is different. It’s a place that is meant to inspire, spur creativity, promote love, and celebrate the achievements of others. It’s content is divided into categories such as Inspire, Believe, Feel, Create, Grow, and Love and features everything from classic “Think Different” commercials to videos such as these…

It thrills me to no end to see artists taking part in spreading messages such as these. You can find Diddy’s blog by clicking here! I don’t know whether it compares to SuperForest in being the most “positive blog in the world” (I may be a bit biased…), but I’m sure you’ll be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

SuperForesters, it looks like we’ve got some competition. And I couldn’t be more thrilled about it.

Love!

People We Love: Charley Harper

Hej SuperForest

I recently received a wonderful book and have since spent happy hours sitting in a sunny corner and enjoying the works of the late wildlife artist Charley Harper:

With a career spanning more than five decades, spent alongside his wife and “soulmate” Edie who he met sitting next to in class on the first day of art school,  Charley captured images primarily of nature in a distinctive “minimal realism” style.  He’s particularly awesome at birds. And insects. And fish. And dinosaurs!  In fact, it’s all exciting.  He often worked with nature organisations and designed many “bio” posters for non-profit conservation groups, nature centers and zoos, United States national parks and monuments, and international wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere preserves.

Explaining how he arrives at his images Charley said:

When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don’t see the feathers in the wings, I just count the wings. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures. I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting; in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe.

“an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts”? recipe for a picture, recipe for life, no?you can check out more of Charley Harper’s work here

Love to Mr Harper,

Love to you

People We Love: Brian Bielmann, Surf Photographer

Having cousins who are surf enthusiasts (and who’s houses contain nearly nothing to read but dozens of issues of Surfer Magazine), I’ve seen a lot of surf and wave photography and of all the works I’ve seen, few can compare to that of Brian Bielmann. He has an incredible eye for showing angles of the sport that make you feel as if you are actually experiencing what’s captured in the image. I was recently introduced to his website and after going through his portfolio, I think I’ve felt just about every emotion in the book.

Of course, his entire site is worth flipping through, but if you’re pressed on time, make sure you check out the “Wipeout” and “Underwater” sections. Here’s a tiny taste.

Amazing, no? So perfect for the ol’ eyeballs after coming home from a final exam. You can check out more of his work here and I highly suggest you do, it’ll have you day dreaming for hours (or at the very least, will provide you with some sweet desktop wallpapers, so it’s a win no matter how you look at it).
