Ben Lowy’s Oil on Water – Beauty Everywhere

Hi SuperForest

Have you seen photographer Ben Lowy‘s quite striking photos?

The images in Lowy’s series, Oil on Water, are reminiscent of nebulae, no?

What’s hard to believe is that Lowy was covering the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico for GQ when – taking a closer look at the cloying reddish substance in the water – he saw the abstract visual interest, and yes – perhaps beauty – of the spread.

It made me a little uncomfortable to find the images attractive when I know what they are – the feeling reminded me a bit of that old debate about whether you can love the art while deploring the artist, but in fact I think is more analogous to delicately lovely sculptures based on deadly viruses.  The oil is there, and the capacity to find beauty in what is is, I think, a fabulously positive thing.
