In keeping with this evening’s “how crazy cool are sea creatures?!” theme, a new study published by Mario Lebrato of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Science in Germany in Nature has found that the Echinodermata family of sea creatures (spiny animals like sea urchins, sea cucumbers and starfish) suck up far more carbon than anticipated (it’s still our problem – they’re just the unsung heroes helping us out a lot more than we thought)
Lebrato’s team estimate that our abundant spiny friends store 100 million tons of carbon in their tissues each year.
