Cosmic Microwave Background: The Planck Telescope’s Full Sky View

Hi hi SuperForest

Have you seen the new full sky image from the European Space Agency’s Planck telescope?

photos: ESA (click on the image for bigger, or hi-res labelled version here)

The image shows radiation released by dust and gas clouds between the stars and the bright light running through the centre is our very own galaxy, the Milky Way (yep, that’s our entire galaxy right there).

Named after German, Nobel prize-winning physicist Max Planck (he of  Planck’s constant among other things), the Planck space telescope was launched in May 2009 and aims to scan the entire sky to build the most accurate map ever of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the relic radiation from the Big Bang.

This image shows cold dust, the red swirls are the coldest parts,  500 light years from the sun – and the Milky Way runs along the bottom of the picture

You can see more Planck images here

Love!
