Last week we posted Kutiman’s “Mother of All Funk Chords” video. If you’ve not seen it, Kutiman went through youtube and collected videos, then mashed them all together to create original songs. But more than that, he’s created an entirely new form of making music. And on top of that, he’s taken people from all walks of life around the world and drafted them into amazing bands no one knew they were joining!
Here’s the man himself to explain:
Now watch this:
I would love love love to see everyone in this video perform this song together onstage. I would die. It would be heavenly.
Kutiman has shown us that no information dies anymore. If you put it on the web, it will become new thoughts and forms. Since everything is getting put on the web, it leads to some very interesting questions…
I was speaking with some friends recently and the idea came up to take every piece of film that had a certain celebrity in it and remix it into something entirely new… Like take Mary Kate Olsen. You could totally remix her life into something entirely new. You could have her growing up, going on adventures, being chased by the paparazzi, fighting werewolves, getting arrested. Because there is so much footage of MK Olsen, by remixing her information, you can make “her” do anything you like. You can make “her” say anything you like.
Or endorse any product you like…
Remember Fred Astaire dancing with the vacuum? That’s just the tippy tip of the icey iceberg.

I chose Mary Kate as an example because she’s one of those very rare celebrities who’s been famous since they were children. Add that she and her sis were on TV (as opposed to movies) means that there exists more footage of her doing and saying things. Footage ripe for remixing.
This certainly is a brave new world. Information is streaming out of all of us and people are picking it up and remaking it into new thoughts and ideas. First youtube gets remixed, then an actual person, then what?
If it looks and sounds as good as Kutiman’s tracks, it will be a fun party.
Love,
Jackson
