Adam Gopnik on Finding Beauty in Miscommunication

“…laugh as much as you breathe, and love as long as you live”
-Author Unknown

Good evening, SuperForest!

While listening to The Moth Radio Hour on npr not long ago, I heard a heart warming story of a father and his son. Writer, Adam Gopnik went for months writing “LOL” assuming the three letters were an abbreviation for “lots of love”. Naturally, in sending messages to his son, he would sign them off “LOL, Dad”. Eventually, he began use LOL with other people as well and considering it as an “electronic hug” of sorts, he would write it in their time of need (when his sister was getting a divorce, when his parents were ill, etc.). Six months passed until his son noticed the misuse and asked him what he thought it meant! And though it creates a rather comedic story (one that totally makes one LOL), Gopnik’s explanation of what it taught him is truly touching.

As I mentioned before, I heard the segment on the radio and I know he describes it in detail in his book, Through the Children’s Gate, and as much as I tried to find text or an audio file or a video of a portion of what I heard, all I could find was an hour long “Authors at Google” lecture he gave a couple years ago. Skip ahead to 15 minutes to hear the story (it ends at around 25:45).

Generation LOL (b. 1995-2010)

The cats that name things are trying to hang the moniker “Generation Z” on all those born in the US from approximately 1995-2010.

Generation LOL works much better, imho.
