Captain Slow’s Amazing Lego House

James May (who many of you may know as Captain Slow from BBC’s Top Gear) loved lego as a child. In fact, he wanted to build a whole house out of it… And guess what he, over 1000 volunteers and 3.3million lego bricks did this summer? Yes, they built it!

To be featured in May’s new show Toy Stories, the two storey house had a lego bed, lego windows, hot lego shower and even a fully functioning lego toilet – you name it.

May was apparently struck by the therapeutic possibilities of lego and “why it affects us in this very beneficial, benign, hippy-trippy way”.

“There are all sorts of things embodied in the Lego brick – geometry and mathematics and truth and proportion and shape and colour … It’s very deep. Everybody should have a box and play with it occasionally. It’s a form of brain training as well. I can’t see how it can be bad for you. Unless you tread on it.”

Unfortunately, the house was in the way of the harvest at the Surrey wine estate where it was built, and as May doesn’t have a garden and couldn’t find a buyer it had to be demolished – and the bricks donated to charity. I thought this was kind of a sad ending to the story, but as Guardian commentor HeidiL says “It’s a shame it had to come down, but that, really, is the nature of lego – you build something great, then take it all apart, go and have your tea, and tomorrow you build something even better”
