Exactly one week ago, Earth Hour was celebrated all over the world. It began as a simple concept and grew to have extraordinary results. First off, here are some stats off of the official Earth Hour site…
•3929 cities, towns and municipalities in 88 countries across 25 time zones participated
•70 national capital city’s participated
•Some 996 global landmarks from mountains to historic buildings and modern architectural landmarks had officially registered to participate in the event. They include: the Pyramids and the Sphinx (Egypt), Eiffel Tower (France), Vatican (Italy), Acropolis (Greece), Big Ben (UK), the Las Vegas Strip and Empire State Building (USA), Christ the Redeemer (Brazil), Bird’s Nest (China) and the Petronas Twin Towers (Malaysia).
That’s great news! To give us more of a visual idea of the effect Earth Hour had on these landmarks, Boston.com’s “The Big Picture” posted some amazing interactive photographs. Starting with the second image on their site, you can click on the picture to see the “on/off” effect Earth Hour had. The results are fabulous! I mean, take a look at the before and after pictures for Vegas!

Personally, I felt that one hour without electricity would be a cake walk so I decided to do five instead and had a lot of fun with it. In fact, I had so much fun I’m hoping Earth Hour becomes more of a routine process. I mean, how awesome would that be if people became so accustomed to Earth Hour, that they naturally stopped using electricity certain times throughout the day?!
Click here to visit the Big Picture and their Earth Hour results section! You’ll have a wicked good time, that’s a promise.
Wishing you a lovely weekend,
Carla
