Land Art Generator Initiative: “Surface Area Required to Power the World”

Amidst the flurry of exciting visual information that is thrown at you on “Information is Beautiful“, I found this one to be particularly interesting.

The squares in the map below show the estimated surface area required to power the world with zero carbon emissions and…with solar panels alone!! (Click to enlarge)

So according to Land Art Generator Initiative, the website that created that beauty of an image, “According to the United Nations 170,000 square kilometers of forest is destroyed each year. If we constructed solar farms at the same rate, we would be finished in 3 years.” Amazing!

And what about other sources of clean energy? Here are the estimations to power the globe using off shore wind power alone!

According to their research, solar panels would have to do the majority of the work in order for these projections to work effectively. But that’s just the thing when it comes to innovative sustainable solutions; the multitude of options out there can be mixed together to form a beautiful recipe for success.  The technologies and efficiencies are improving daily, now let’s see how to go about putting them in place.

Have an excellent day!
