Poems About Animals: A Korean Crow

I do not know what your name is,
but I will call you “crow,” for you remind me
of your cousins back home.
You catch my eye
streaks of blue and white against black,
rather than America’s squawking midnights

You seem surprised at the metropolis
that has sprung up around you.
Head tilted, you call to your friends, and fly
tree to power line, power line to tree

Sorry about missing the verse last week. I pulled my back and could barely get out of bed. All better now. Hope you like this one. Squawk.

Drake’s Journal: Cherry Blossoms and Sunburn

I ventured to the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula this past weekend, with the terrific team of my girlfriend Nicole and our friend Kira. We sought out cherry blossoms, but, as so often is the case, we ended up with something a little different. Please mouse over for captions.

Oh, Korea, I see you have many more surprises in store for me. Happy Spring, everyone!

Hello SuperForest!

I’m in Jeollabuk-do,  a province within the great country of South Korea. Not only is this the place where the amazacrazy bibimbap originated from, but the city I’m in, Jeonju, is the sister city (how awesome is this sister city concept?) of a place I’ve never visited but felt a great kinship for… San Diego! Photos and videos are coming as soon as I get back into Hong Kong and properly type and arrange everything. It’s only been two days here but it has felt like a long, long time! The way of life here is something to be admired. The food is fresh, straight from the farm next door and always served with a warm smile and an offering of soju : P

soon soon soon!

Ask SuperForest: Christine’s Question!

Good Morning SuperForest!

We’ve just received a question from SuperForester Christine:

“Dear SuperForest,

Hello! How are you? I love your blog!

So, I’ve got a bit of a dilemma and hope you can help. I’m a busy working single mom who is in need of streamlining my dining. I’m a dutiful recycler and re-user, but am finding that I’d like to eliminate the need for that by simply using smarter products. So, I’m in search of something that can allow me to store food in batches that can be easily reheated. Here’s wherein my challenge lies because I’d like in this food container:

1) no plastic, I’m tired of so much of it around

2) lightweight, for on the go

3) varied sizes, for different yummy things

4) freezer-capable, to use later

5) oven-capable, I don’t own a microwave

I reuse my plastic take-out containers, but then have to scoop that food into oven-ready dishes, then serve onto our dish ware, and that’s just a lot of dishes and wasted energy! My poor hands! Anyway, my desire is to be able to cook and prepare nice healthy foods for myself and my daughter, which I can then store (be it a couple days or weeks), pop in the oven, serve or sometimes eat from, then wash and repeat!

Hope you can help!

PS. Is it also too much to ask that it be designed nicely as well?”

Christine!

Thank you for your question. I’m sure that by now a lot of folks have heard about the potential for plastic packaging to introduce some interesting chemicals into ones body, and are wondering about the safety of their food storage containers.

We think we have an elegant, long lasting, and beautifully designed solution:

Sanctus Mundo
is a Korean company that makes a wide variety of glass and stainless steel food containers. Yes, they are manufactured and shipped from Korea, but once here, they will last a long time and mitigate the use of many plastic containers.

Here’s the pdf of the entire line.

Sanctus Mundo’s products are imported by lifewithoutplastic.com and are available through their website.

Hello From Korea!

Hello All,

Jackson here.

I am writing this from the internet cafe on an island off of the Korean peninsula.
All of the wonderful things I’ve seen and learned this trip!
It will take some time to grok them fully, but when waiting has been accomplished, I will post a full update.

Korea is an amazing place, so sensible and so wild! A wonderful and stimulating disparity.

At any rate, I’m so excited to return to New York and get back to posting full-time.

For now, I’ve got to go and set my tattooed self in the sauna and sweat out last nights’ debauchery.

Love to all!

Incredible Choreographed Korean Samsung Dance!

Man, we were looking all over for this!

Thank you, youtube.

What really bakes our noodle is the logistical nightmare of getting a thousand people to show up for practice. Fun!

No seriously, it is so inspiring to see that many individuals acting as one. Never really seen its equal before. Just goes to show the spectacular things that can be accomplished when we work together.

Love to all,
