Monday Modern Art Chat: Kinetica Art Fair

If you ask wikipedia what kinetic art means, it answers:

Kinetic art is art that contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, a motor or the observer.

And I think that that is a real nice definition, though I would rather go with: “art that moves”.

Kinetic sculptures are, in my opinion, probably the most interesting branch of sculpting. Simply because it’s changeable and interacts with it’s surroundings. Okay, I’ll give you an example. I once read about this art group in New York that placed a sculpture in the river. And depending on the stream of the water it moved, very slowly and subtle, but it moved. But artists can go much further then the stream of the water or a mild blow of wind. At least, that’s what’s going to be shown at the Kinetica Art Fair in London next weekend (it’s arguable whether the Fair deserves it’s name since there are also some installations using light and sound. But lets discuss about that another time.)

The above picture is a photograph of the prototype Adrian Baynes is going to exhibit at the KAF ’09, it’s named Wall of Eyes (how applicable) and it’s a wall consisting of 255 manequin eyes. And when you walk along the wall, the eyes follow you. A very original idea Mr. Baynes and if it all works properly you did a good job on the programming; a typical prototype always requiers software programming and a microcontroller.

The KAF is stocked full with people like Baynes and their art. The original goal of the fair is to connect artists with potential buyers. But what individual wants a wall in his home to be covered with eyes that watch every step he takes? Perhaps it’s fun to have such an installation in a museum of contemporary art.

At the fair artists from Kinetica (a London museum and art collective), new media/art companies and individuals will present their work. There are going to be workshops, lectures and performances. The fair starts on Friday the 27th with an awesome opening and ends on the 2nd of March.
