Dear SuperForesters,
I’d like to pose a question:
You see this here cube filled with stuff, is it rubbish or art?
In 2001, NY City-based artist Justin Gignac started selling rubbish. Yes, miscellaneous discarded items sprawled across the streets of the Big Apple. The idea hit him after a co-worker refused to agree that package design holds much power and importance (though one look at Steve Jobs’ iAnything would’ve ended the dispute then and there).
So Justin set about collecting rubbish on the streets of New York, then packaged and sealed it in smell-proof cubes to make art. It’s nine years later and 1,300 cubes have been sold and now reside in cities all over the world.
Browse through many variants of rubbish cubes here, and read more about Justin Gignac’s NYC Garbage project here.
So is it rubbish or art? I say a little of both.
April
