Last week the internet was buzzing with the whole “Sad Keanu” meme that came about after the now all-famous park bench image was being edited and altered across the globe. Almost immediately, people began to step forward with stories and articles (including one of the first I read from SuperForester Drake) about how Reeves was actually a pretty swell guy. An entire website was created to thank the chap and eventually, “Cheer Up Keanu Day” was born.
As described on its facebook page…
On June 15th, we plan on sending letters, emails, gifts, and any other niceties and kind words to a real bro, Keanu Reeves. Mr. Reeves has had a long and fruitful career across various media but has not gotten the recognition deserved for his talent nor his humility. Please participate in Cheer Up Keanu Day, and hopefully bring a smile to Keanu Reeves’ face.
Though I admit, the whole thing is rather silly, it is pretty nice to see more and more examples that the internet’s often criticized powers can be used for good and that people can analyze a trend and offer a more cheerful alternative (especially considering it may have started right on 4chan).
Who knew? The internet really does have a conscience. :)
