You Are What You Think: James Allen’s “Ideals”

Good morning, SuperForest!

We’re all aware of the power of thought and how internal thinking has a way of manifesting itself in our external realities. It’s a topic that has always interested me, so when I read this brilliant piece of poetry by James Allen, I couldn’t help but be taken aback by the pure simplicity in the presentation of these often convoluted thoughts.

“Ideals”

As you think you travel,
as you love, you attract.

You are today where you thoughts have brought you;
you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.

You cannot escape the result of your thoughts.
but you can endure and lean, can accept and be glad.

You will realize the vision (not the idle wish) of your heart,
be it base or beautiful, or a mixture of both,
for you will always gravitate towards that which you
secretly most love.

In your hands will be placed the exact result of
your thoughts; you will receive that which you
earn, find no more, no less.

Whatever your present environment may be
you will fall, remain, or rise with your thoughts,
your wisdom, your ideal.

You will become as small as your controlling desire,
as great as your dominant aspiration.

Descartes brought us the famous “Cogito ergo sum“, or “I think, therefore I am”, the idea that one’s thinking is proof of existence. In this poem, Allen took it a bit further by showing us that thinking, in all ways, also affects our existence. So I guess he’d say something like, “I think, therefore I create my own existence.” Hmmm, it’s not as catchy, but the message’s importance is all the same. ;)

Love,
