Internet Treasures: The YouTube Time Machine

The irony of the timing of this post cannot go unnoticed, (I just put up a post about the immeasurable value of the “present moment” and now a post about something that “transports” you through time? Come on!) but despite this, neither could the insane awesomeness that is this website. Ergo, I present to you, YouTube Time Machine.

It’s function is primarily described in its title, as in any standard model time machine, you slide your marker to the desired year on the timeline (ranging from 1860 to 2010) and via YouTube, a whole bunch of videos are then gathered within the categories of “Video Games”, “Television”, “Commercials”, “Current Events”, “Sports”, “Movies”, and “Music”.

Sayeth Justin Johnson, one of the creators of this website:

I had been up very late watching Michael Jordan videos from 1996. It made me feel so awesome deep down inside … like it was Sunday afternoon, and I was 14, sipping on a milkshake and watching my fav team play. That Jordan-fest lurched into a 4 am search for Primal Rage videos, and countless other mid-90s stuff.

I realized then, that it wasn’t specifically Jordan or Primal Rage videos I was searching for … it was 1996 … the feeling of being in 1996 …the intangibles of that year fascinated me, but getting bogged down in the specifics and having to make CHOICES eventually spoiled my quest.

As I was lost, in the mists of time, Del broke me out of my ponderous silence and said “DUDE! THAT SHOULD BE A WEBSITE!!” I said “YES!” he said “YES!” – and then we probably high 5’ed.

I visited the website a few nights ago and pretty much displayed the same type of enthusiasm described by Johnson. Because “YES!” and “OMG!” are the just about the perfect words to describe your feelings when you set the marker to 1935 and are presented with classic Mickey Mouse cartoons, and set it to 1969 and dive into a Lakers vs. Celtics Game 7 4th Quarter NBA Finals game, or even when you land on 1999 and are reminded of that mind-numbing classic “Blue (Da Ba Dee)“.

Because as sweet as it is to live in the “present”, there’s no denying the occasional trip down memory lane is sure to set your face ablaze with smiles and make you appreciate everything you have at this moment and all it took to get you here.

And have a wonderful yesterday.

Internet Treasures: “Fake Science”

Perhaps it’s because I’m in the final stretch before Summer vacation and my brain is just overloaded with information, but as of late, I’ve found myself captivated by all of the amazingness that is “Fake Science“, the internet place to go when you need a shortcut to find the answers to some of science’s baffling mysteries. Mysteries such as…

Give the site the ol’ click and scroll whenever you get a moment. Because while they might be short on scientific fact, they’re overflowing with humor and laughs. And that always makes anything way worth it. :)

Internet Treasures: JeffBridges.com

jeffbridges.com

Hello Superforesters! I hope you are all having a lovely day :) Here in the fine city of Ottawa, it is grey as can be, but as I look out my window I still see pretty trees and shiny water droplets from melting snow. This post is not about weather, though — I am here today to talk to you about JeffBridges.com!

For a few years now I’ve been enjoying the creative musings of Jeff Bridges, the actor, via his website. I’ve been a fan of Mr. Bridges for as long as I can remember, from The Big Lebowski to The Fisher King to Against all Odds and The Door in the Floor. There are many other great Jeff Bridges movies, but he is not just an actor. The man is a photographer, humanitarian, musician and all-around creative dude. That’s right, there’s the Lebowski reference.

Jeff is getting a lot of press these days for Crazy Heart, and although I have not yet seen the film, I anticipate that it will be very powerful and entertaining. Because of all this press, I thought it might be a good time to share his website with all of you, and perhaps you’ll enjoy it just as much as I have.

My favourite section is the Stuff section, as he shares all kinds of things that can educate, inform, incite laughter, entertain or provoke thought. He also takes photos with a Widelux camera that provides amazing panoramic shots.

Seemingly a bit of a renaissance man, Jeff Bridges is also a bit of a Superforester himself — he cares about the world, art, humanity and the environment. He also mentions charities and causes on the site: The End Hunger Network (which he helped found in 1983), The Dream Foundation and The Amazon Conservation Team among others.

I hope you enjoyed perusing JeffBridges.com and found it as colourful, artistic and interesting as I do! Gotta love those quotes and doodles — on a grey day such as today, it’s creativity and positivity like this that keeps me smiling.

Internet Treasures: “Charting the Beatles”

Good evening, SuperForest!

A few months ago, I posted the simple, yet oh-so-beautiful “Hey Jude Flowchart” here on SuperForest. The idea of visually representing something so well known in such a clever manner pleased my inner geek immensely, which is why my head spun when I found that graphic designer Michael Deal took this concept and intensified it with his brand new project, “Charting the Beatles”.

The website is still in the works, but his sample work is absolutely amazing.  Here are a couple tasty bits.

Half of me wonders if anybody would actually need this information, but then the other half stops me and says “It’s the Beatles! Of course you need it! You need more, you need more!”

You can find “more” of Michael Deal’s work on his website, he’s a cat that’s definitely worth checking out. And if you are interested in contributing to the “Charting the Beatles” project, you can click here.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day,

C

Internet Treasures: After the Harvest (Plus an Exclusive Interview With its Creator, SuperForester Heather!!!)

Dear SuperForesters,

Since joining SuperForest, I’ve found that its team is comprised of an extraordinary group of beautiful individuals; each with its own wonderful characteristic or element to offer. Our newest teammate, the lovely SuperForester Heather is certainly no exception. She, like other SuperForesters, runs her own blog apart from contributing to SuperForest. Recently, I interviewed SuperForester Heather and it is with extreme pleasure that I present to you an absolute gem of a site, After the Harvest!

After the Harvest

SuperForest: Tell us about After the Harvest.

SuperForester Heather: After the Harvest is a blog that I started that touches on a variety of topics relating to food and drink. A little bit of fun, a little bit of analysis, and a whole lot of food and drink inspired topics can be found on After the Harvest. One thing that really features on the site are the stories behind the food and drink — the inspiring people I have met and profiled.

SF: What inspired you to start this blog?

SFH: My whole life I’ve loved food — it’s always been important in our family to sit down and eat, drink, talk and really enjoy the experience. When I was little I used to write in my diary what each of us ate when we visited a restaurant, so I guess you could say it started from an early age. Over the years I have found myself in many food-centric jobs and I realized that food and drink is a passion of mine that I can’t ignore. So when I decided to start a blog to work on my other passion — writing — the logical subject matter was food and drink. At first I resisted the idea, since there are a million and one food bloggers out there, but I wanted to get my writing out there and stay inspired, so I went for it.

SF: What inspired you to choose the title?

SFH: The title After the Harvest came from a desire to name the blog something that would encapsulate eating, drinking and connecting with the people in our lives — I know it’s been said many times, but food brings people together, and that is what I love about it. So, I asked myself, “What happens after the harvest? After the corn is harvested, after the eggs are collected, after the grapes are picked….” and I realized that after we harvest our food, we eat, drink and connect.

SF: What’s your favorite thing about cooking?

SFH: My favourite thing about cooking is experimenting! You know how some people are bakers, and some are cooks? Well, I’m definitely not a baker. I love to grab a bunch of ingredients on the fly and throw them into a pan, using only my inspiration from the food to create a great meal. I guess my need for experimentation has grown out of the fact that I’ve lived alone for the past 5 years, so it gets boring eating the same ol’ thing every night! I’ve also realized this style of cooking is genetic, as I have inherited it from my father, who is a great culinary inspiration in my life.

SF: What’s your favorite holiday inspired recipe that you could share with us?

SFH: Right now my favourite holiday recipe is the Mint Chocolate Snowflake, a cocktail I came up with. You can see the recipe here! For those of you who aren’t legal or prefer something non-alcoholic, I am also going to be sharing some nostalgic holiday recipes on After the Harvest very soon, so stay tuned!

SF: From one blogger to another, what do you enjoy the most about blogging?

SFH: The most enjoyable thing about blogging for me is coming up with an idea for my post. I see my posts as articles, not diary entries. It is my dream someday to write for a magazine, so I approach it like that.

With respect to SuperForest, my favourite thing about blogging for SuperForest is going through my day, my week with eyes wide open, looking for positive, inspiring things to share — if you look for positivity, beauty and goodness, you will find it. It’s a refreshing way to go about your day. I also love sharing my journey to become a more meditative, reflective person.

SF: What do you think is an easy way for SuperForesters to start practicing eating sustainably?

SFH: Step one would be to read some of Michael Pollan’s books. Not only is the man a genius, he’s a great writer and he’ll make it really clear what “real food” is and wake you up about what you’re eating.

Secondly, when you’re at the grocery store, try not to buy too much in the middle aisles. One thing I try to tell myself is, if my recycle bin fills up too fast, it means I’m eating too many packaged foods. If you eat an apple, there’s no packaging to throw away. When you do buy your apples, or any other produce, take a look at the sticker, or the sign above, and see where it came from. Consider buying organic over conventional. Check out your local farmers market or sign up for a CSA. Take a look at the meat you are eating, where is it coming from? How has it been raised? Also even looking at your morning coffee as a sustainable choice will help make change. I have many posts on this topic on the blog. I know you asked for an easy way — I guess it’s like the SF manifesto — start with your immediate surroundings, and go from there.

SF: What are your goals/aspirations for After the Harvest? What do you hope to achieve?

SFH: My immediate goal is to share my writing with more people! I want to spread my ideas and writing style around, and start a conversation. After that, even though it is a passion, I would love to turn my writing into a job that rewards me not only with personal satisfaction but allows me to make a living. Further to that I would like to expand the After the Harvest brand and look into using it for other ideas in the future. I’m not sure where that will lead me, but I’m looking forward to the journey! I would love to feature more inspiring people behind the flavours. It is fascinating to me to find out who they are and what calls them to work with food and drink. I’d also like to give a little shout-out to the artist that created the After the Harvest custom artwork — my sister, Wendy Heagney-Bakewell of WHDesigns. You can check out more of her work here: www.whdesigns.ca

Amazing! To read Heather’s recent post in which she interviews, food photographer, Edward Pond, click here! It’s a fabulous interview, and prior to posting it, Heather had ensured us that his methods are a bit more traditional than this guy’s (phew!). : )

Major thanks go out to SuperForester Heather for taking the time to answer those questions!

One Love,
Carla

Internet Treasure: La Blogotheque

Hello, SuperForesters!

Okay so let me start out by saying I feel a bit silly sharing something that I’m pretty sure most of you have heard of. But nevertheless, I figure if we introduce it to a few people here, that’d be a major win. Plus, you can never have too much of a good thing, right?

Ladies and gents, this is La Blogotheque.

La Blogotheque

La Blogotheque is a website that revolves around the “Take-Away Show” concept. One musician or band has about a 3 song video recording session and apart from them all being in Paris, it is usually in an unstaged atmosphere. Today, over 90 artists have contributed to La Blogotheque providing us with access to fresher than fresh performances.

I think I was first introduced to La Blogotheque a little over a year ago, through this video:

Granted, I didn’t know what “La Blogotheque” was but I did appreciate the impromptu style of the video. The melody would stay with me for a while and the sweet simple lyrics served as a kind reminder of the beautiful potency that lies within each day to be truly wonderful.

Months later, “It’s Nice that” featured La Blogotheque on their website and being that the name struck a very familiar chord, I clicked on the site to check it out. What I found was something truly awesome. Tons of videos shot in the same easy-going mannner as the one I had heard before. My heartbeat quickened as I scrolled through the artists; Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Cold War Kids, Grizzly Bear, The Kooks, Jose Gonzalez, aaaahhh! Needless to say, yes, it is amazing and in debating which of the incredible performances to share with you (and after some prodding by SuperForester Iman), I decided to keep it classic and just share a fun one by The Shins. The sweet sweet Shins.

There’s something about these take away shows that make me so appreciative of music. These videos show a side of our favorite musicians that feels so raw and so genuine. Though all of the videos and music styles are pretty different, there is a key feature in all of the videos that ties them all together. Each video contains an artist and his/her instrument, and with that you see an incredible passion. A love for what they are doing. They are making sound and they are having the time of their life. Check out La Blogotheque here, you’ll love it.

Coincidentally enough, just a few days ago the wonderfully talented SuperForester Iman doodled this for me!

Apparently, the magic of take away shows left some sort of effect on her, too. It IS a lovely day. And I thank both her and SuperForester Jason for that beautiful reminder.

Love to all!

Internet Treasures: wwwatch and “The Fan and the Flower”!

It seems like ever since the emergence of image bookmarking website FFFFOUND!, there have been several websites surfacing with similar concepts. Wwwatch is one of those websites. And as the name suggests, rather than displaying a plethora of entrancing images, it showcases videos. Lots and lots of good videos! Perhaps this is a dream website to some and a horrifying distraction for others, but nevertheless wwwatch’s awesomeness cannot be denied.

To give an example, here is a heartwarming video I found there this morning! A touching love story between a fan (as in, an electric one that is mounted on a ceiling) and a flower. That’s right, a fan and a flower.

Oh, the cuteness! My wee little heart can only take so much!

You can wwwatch more videos here! Check out the site, it is a gem.

Love to all,
Carla
