Introducing: SuperForest News

Heyo SuperForest!

So today I was inspired. Today I decided that the old news needs to go. Today I decided to start SuperForest News Network! For now it will simply be distributed on our Facebook page daily (or at least as often as I/we can). The idea behind it for now is to share potential news stories (the headlines at the very least) that should be making the news. For now it will just be generic awesomnesses, but in the future I would love to get actual specific stories of awesomeness from around the world. I want to share stories of kindness, love, compassion, thoughtfulness, sincerity, surprise, kittens, and puppies. Like I said the things that should be making the headlines. So, PLEASE go head over to our Facebook page and like it, so we can spread happy stories around the net and globe! Here is our first story (note: most stories will only feature on the Facebook page as a headline, and not on SuperForest.org main page):

SuperForest News: This just in – mother read bedtime story to child last night. As a result the Child slept happily. Today at school she brought kindness to peers and teachers, smiles were had by all.

Heather’s Journal: Roles We Play

Hey SuperForest!!

I’d like to ask you something:

Who are you?

Are you a different version of yourself depending upon who you are with or what you’re doing? I’ve been thinking about the different roles we play in life, and after reading this post this morning from one of our favourite SuperForesters, it really sparked something for me.

SuperForester Jason posited the following thought: “How you do anything is how you do everything.” I don’t disagree with this statement, however I think sometimes we do things within a context of the role we’re playing at that time, in that group, in that time period and location.

For example, a while ago I was watching The Office, and I made a startling realization: I’m Dwight Schrute! Well, not exactly, but in a work setting, sometimes I can be the “yes” woman, the “brown-noser”, the one whose job it is to remind her boss that he/she is always right and has fabulous ideas. For some reason it’s a pattern I’ve fallen into throughout my career. Don’t get me wrong, SuperForesters, I’m not a phony — I just prefer to keep things peaceful at work and not rock the boat. I tend to keep my opinions close and choose my battles wisely. Maybe it’s because I was an extremely rule-abiding, school-loving child, often the one left in charge when the teacher left the room.  I’m also often the social committee chair, hence my realization, as in this particular episode, Dwight was also in this role and he telling the other staff members precisely when it would be appropriate to open their Secret Santa gifts, and precisely where to place them under the tree. Keener! Neatnik! Whatever you call it, it’s kinda me at work — I’m definitely more than just a peacekeeping brown-noser, but this is just one example of a pattern I’ve noticed in my past.

Conversely, I know that I am a very different version of myself outside of work, in some respects at least. I’ve had a few situations where I’ve met someone outside of work who only knew me in a work-related context, and they were like, “Wow! You’re so fun and easygoing!” This definitely made me aware of how structured and rule-abiding I was at work, or in any project resembling work. Can you say Type A??

In our families, we can fulfill many roles. Depending on birth order or number (and gender) of siblings, this can take many different forms. I am the youngest child. For years I have fulfilled that role quite predictably, but lately I’ve been noticing a shift in who I am in relation to my family. As families grow and people age, roles can shift and change as well. Maybe you were always the one who tried things last, discovered things last, always wore hand-me-downs and had a band of older, wiser people to protect you and teach you things. I’m learning these days that I just may have something to teach the older members of my family. Perhaps I can offer a different perspective, a new idea that they haven’t thought of, because of the direction their life has taken versus the direction mine has. We all have something to share, after all, regardless of our birth order. I’ve been re-energized through this sharing process because I feel like I can finally give back to my family all of the wisdom, advice and energy they have imparted to me over the years.

What role do you play in social situations? Are you chatty with one friend, quiet with another? Shy with the opposite sex, or is that where you really turn on the charm? I’m not suggesting that we consciously play these roles; I am merely suggesting that we feed off others’ energy and adapt accordingly. At least I do, but perhaps that’s just in my Piscean nature.

So, food for thought on a fabulous Friday, SuperForest: Who are you being?

Yours in transparency,

SuperForester Heather

Heather’s Journal – Dear SuperForest…

Jackson recently posted a question here on SuperForest, and it was answered within 12 hours of posting! This is definitely an example of the generous nature of all of you Superforesters out there who see a call for help and answer with gusto!

So…I thought I’d put you to the test, SuperForest! Can you help me, too? I am trying to grow my blog, After the Harvest into a business! After years of trying to put my round self into the square peg of the corporate world, I’ve decided to do what I love and hope the money comes! What do I love? I love to write, research, share, create and think up big ideas! I love to engage with others and share creativity and love!

So far After the Harvest has been a blog committed to food and drink, and it will remain on topic in the future, but I’ve been trying to wrack my brain for ways to allow it to make money for me, or expand it in other ways so it can sustain my life — sustainability is what we are all seeking, and unfortunately sometimes that starts with paying the bills! I’ve already got Google Ads on there, but I’ll be replacing them soon with private advertisements supporting companies I believe in — so I’m not really looking for ways to monetize the blog; rather I’m looking for services I can provide to others for payment that will be an extension of what I’m already doing. What do you think I have to offer to potential “customers”? (although I am not a fan of the word customer…I like to think of them as friends I’d be helping out, and they just happen to be paying me in paper money!) I suppose they’d be my patrons, right Jackson?

Take a look around the blog and let me know what you think I should do! Do you know anyone who has created a business out of their blog? Suggestions are welcome and so are questions! One creative mind sometimes just isn’t enough — I need my SuperForest community to help me :) I do have a poll on the blog that asks what types of events local people might be interested in, as that has been the one idea I’ve come up with — putting on events. However that costs money too…

Don’t worry though — I’m not going anywhere! My commitment to Superforest is stronger than ever and I will definitely be able to contribute more in the future, I just want to grow my little blog that could!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! If you would like to email me personally, feel free to do so at aftertheharvest@gmail.com

Thank you for reading, SuperForesters! I am trying to  live the dream, I just need a little help :)
