“Art in Service of the Environment”: Ice Bear Project

While some of the world’s leaders from across the globe are discussing climate change and global environmental issues during the COP 15 conference…over in London, out in the public eye, stands a melting polar bear made of ice.

Well…that’s what it used to look like. Now it probably looks a bit more like this…

Artist and ice-sculptor, Mark Coreth, “witnessed the effects of climate change when he first travelled to Baffin Island during November 2007. Mark knew that few will ever experience the Arctic, but realised that he could bring the Arctic to everyone in the form of an Ice Bear sculptural event.” He traveled to central squares in major cities across the globe and was able to take a serious issue and give it artistic form by creating his sculptures. Visitors were encouraged to touch the sculpture which symbolically caused it to melt further (ingeniously demonstrating human’s effect on such delicate creatures and places) exposing the bronze skeleton within.
