Carla’s Journal (6/9/10): Hummingbird Rescue

Good Morning, SuperForest!

A couple weeks ago, while having breakfast in the backyard with the family, my dad walked over to the table with a hummingbird in his palm. The little guy had just flown into our kitchen window while pops was toasting some bread and lucky for him, my dad was around to notice it. I say this because my dad has always had incredible luck when it comes to rescuing animals, especially our feathered friends. We’ve had experience with cockatiels, lovebirds, canaries, and chickens as pets but my dad has a pretty impressive resume when it comes to caring for wild birds as well. Two baby birds so young they didn’t even have feathers, 9 ducklings for which he stopped his car at a busy intersection, stopped the traffic, scooped them up into his shirt, and found the parents and returned them to them hours later, and now this.

He brought it to the table to show us, and once the bird woke up, my dad dipped his finger in the fig preserve he had at the table and held it in front of the bird. Soon enough, it had a good taste and began to fly. But stopped at a nearby plant to pose for a few pictures before it took off.

It’s always amazing to see or read about amazing animal rescues or experiences, and despite this one being tiny microscopic version of anything like that. Like much of the other experiences that went before it, It was a pretty special experience nonetheless. :)

Love,
C

P.S. After consulting the trusty internet, it looks like my dad’s dip and offer technique is pretty much a spot on example of what you’re supposed to do when you find a hummingbird in a similar situation (though apparently sugar water isn’t sufficient for longterm care).
