This weekend marked the culmination of the 5-day celebration of Diwali 2009: a major religious holiday in Hinduism (the festival is also of significance in Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism). Known as the “Festival of Lights” the story and traditions of Diwali varies across religions and geographic regions, but it celebrates, in general terms, the victory of good over evil.
Celebrants set oil-filled lamps outside buildings and set them adrift on rivers. Flickr yielded some nice pictures:
