These elegant transparent glass sculptures were created by artist Luke Jerram (whose Play Me, I’m Yours pianos SuperForester April wrote about earlier this year) in consultation with virologists and in collaboration with glassblowers – showing some of the world’s most serious viruses, from HIV to Smallpox.

Jerram’s aim is to “contemplate the global impact of each disease and to consider how the artificial colouring of scientific imagery affects our understanding of phenomena”, “exploring the tension between the artworks’ beauty and what they represent, their impact on humanity”.

Beauty from unexpected places. Thanks to SuperForester Mhairi, who always finds science beautiful, for the tip.
