Jackson’s Journal (5/6/09) – The Arch

Good morning SuperForest!

Today has been a busy one.
We just received the German translation of the Humanifesto, which master Spoon is typing up as we speak. A huge thank you to SuperForester Susanne who did the translating.

germanhumanifesto(Danke Schoen, Susanne!)

The French version just came in as well! Bravo, SuperForester Marie-Paule! I’ll have that formatted and up with great haste!

I spent the afternoon in the fine company of the 4fives, (whose blog is looking excellent,) and we learned about the arch and how very useful it is. I’m working on a grand ol’ post about that.

SuperForester Severine called and told me that in reference to my ravishing rescued rosemary plants, a good idea is to take a pice of willow tree bark and soak it in water for an hour to the release salycilic acid. If one dips a cutting into this mixture, the acid provokes a hormonal response in the plant, and the plant responds by sending out shoots! Thanks for the tip, Sevvy! Botany win!

I hope everyone is having a great day.

Much love,

Jackson

Balloony Tank

It isn’t a piece of unconventional wisdom that war isn’t nice. Neither are the guns and tanks driving it. You can make fun of war to a certain extent. Something that isn’t done often enough (in my humble opinion). It seems that the artists behind the German art group Inges Idee agree with me.

Inges Idee is a German movement that advertise themselves with the motto: “Kunst im öffentlichen Raum,” German for: “Art in open space”. They can best be classified as organized street artists.
The above picture shows their “luftballon” (German for balloon) project. Which concludes building a tank out of bright, colorful, balloons! And look at the result, it’s jolly, it’s awesome.

Now you may think: “that’s a tank, and tanks bring desperation”. But there’s more to explore. Ask yourself what a balloon actually consists of, it’s probably 99% air and a tiny 1% ‘balloon’. It’s as if the artists are trying to say: “War is nothing, it’s silly, it’s dumb.” They seem right, because what happens to balloons if you let them be for a few days?

They deflate! The Inges Idee men must have listened carefully to General Eisenhower when he said: “If stripped of all it’s glory, war is nothing but hot air“. Eisenhower is right, except I can’t seem to find glory in war, but we’ll leave that for now.

Baumraum – a Tree house

At some point in your life you probably built a tree house. Or wanted to. It’s just cool to have your own space above the ground separated from the rest of the world, right?
That’s probably the exact thing that Andreas Wenning thought when he created Baumraum. Wenning is a German architect and furniture designer who started the previously mentioned Baumraum. It’s actually just a tree house, but for grown ups.

This is one of the many designs Baumraum offers. All the designs are more or less custom made, that means that there is a list of designs that are fine-tuned to your wishes and your tree. I must say I’m pretty impressed with the quality of the houses. Take a look at this picture taken from a Baumraum house in Austria.

You can actually sleep in it! How does that do on the awesome-scale?! And look at those windows. You are waked and the first thing you see is a sea of green leaves, you hear a variety of birds and all of a sudden you feel a little closer to nature.

It should be noted that Baumraum houses are tree-friendly (yay!) their construction requires no nails or screws in the tree. So the tree’s vessels stay intact and it certainly won’t get sick. But how does your house stay up in the air then? An intelligent question, Baumraum uses steel cables that are connected to the ground and pieces of extremely sturdy textile that are montaged onto the tree.

For €20.000 (roughly $25.000) Wenning’s company will make sure you get a professional tree house up your tree.
Think about the possibilities such a ‘baumraum’ can give you. It’s an awesome sleeping place, you can use it as a terrace and have a drink while the sun sets on that warm summer day or you can make it into a place where you can break away from the stressful day-to-day life.
