World Environment Day 2009: Freeze NZ!

worldenvironmentday

Heyo SuperForest!

Most of you know that Earth Day here in the United States is April 22, but did you know that the rest of the world celebrates it on June 5th? I can’t explain why this is so, I would think that Earth Day should be something global and I hadn’t even learned about World Environment Day until a Spanish friend informed me of it. I’ll be sure to celebrate on both dates properly next year. But until then, we can reflect on an awesome activity some cats in New Zealand participated in to spread awareness on World Environment Day of this year…”Freeze NZ”.

As described by the Freeze NZ website:

At 1pm on World Environment Day 2009, people across New Zealand froze. They came together in public places and became human statues – stopping and standing for united action on climate change. Over a thousand people took part.

So to give us a peek at what this was like, here is a video by a guy who was able to capture some of it.

Awesome. I love these kinds of demonstrations. It’s interesting because not everyone participated (or probably even knew about it) but it somehow adds to the dramatic effect because it makes those that did stand still, seem more out of place.

Yay, New Zealand! Way to celebrate World Environment Day with class!
