Stunning Photographs: Lorraine Mondial Air Balloons Rally!

lorraine-mondial-air-ballons-2

Hello, SuperForest!

I just learned that on July 26th of this year, the largest mass ascent of hot air balloons took place at the biennial Lorraine Mondial Air Balloons rally in Chambley, France! Pilots from around the world lifted off in 329 balloons. And as I look at the images that have been posted up on flickr, I find it seems to be the stuff of fantasies.

And here’s a quick video of some on-the-scene footage!

Absolutely gorgeous! And so very cheerful! I’ve only been hot air ballooning once, and believe it or not, it was at night (no joke) and in my cul-de-sac (still not joking). So, after looking at these pictures, I’m pretty sure my next hot air balloon experience would be better spent during the day. :) Hope this finds you all smiling and having fun.

One Love,
C

Carla’s Journal (7/21/09): Back from Europe!

Nice, France

Good day, SuperForest!

Last time I posted, I was writing from the lovely city of Como, Italy. Today, I am back home wondering how to go about sharing some exciting parts of my travels. My initial plan was to give a couple updates while I was over there. But obviously, that didn’t happen. So now I’m left with three memory cards full of pictures and a hundred something Flip videos. It’s probably for the best, I’ll give an abridged version and try to share some of the best of the best that Europe had to offer.

Unfortunately, I must begin this with an apology, the two nights I left my Flip in the hotel room, break dancers literally came bouncing into the town’s main plaza and gave gravity defying performances. Both times, mind you. They must’ve been camera shy. Or maybe the universe was just messing with me. So that part of the story has to be left out. On the up side, if you are with me in Europe, and I am camera-less, we can expect break dancers.

Onward to Switzerland!

Zermatt, Switzerland

After staying in Como for a few days, my family and I took a train through the Swiss Alps.

Switzerland

SuperForest, meet Super Forests:

(apologies, I was in a train while filming and they wouldn’t let me break down the window to get rid of that pesky glare. And it’s short and kinda boring…but you’ll get an idea of what it was like!)

We then got to Paris on the 14th and were able to watch the dazzling fireworks display celebrating the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille in 1789. Huzzah, French Revolution!

(This one starts out with just our view from the wall we were sitting on. Then you’ll get a taste of the fireworks display. Apologies for the terrible lighting at the end! In France, they wouldn’t let me shut off all the street lights so you guys would get a better look. (hehe) But again, you get the idea.)

The last few days of the trip were spent exploring the streets of Paris. (As you can see, Imanza got into a bit of trouble right from the start)

Paris

All in all, my second time visiting this marvelous city was just as euphoric as my first. When it comes to major cities, I don’t think any others can match Paris’ beauty (ahem, the people as well as the city itself. lol)

Paris, France

Grazie, Danke, and Merci to the fabulous countries I visited. I am so grateful to have had the oportunity to walk your streets, meet some of your lovely people, and most importantly, eat your food. Mmmm!

Reflecting back on this trip, I find I have discovered one of the best parts of traveling…coming home. It was a wonderful adventure, and I will never forget it, but traveling also allows you some time to reflect on and appreciate everything and everyone you left behind. The big hug you give your dog upon return, sleeping in your own bed…Dorothy knew what she was saying when chanting the ever famous, “There’s no place like home.” So thank you to San Diego, as well. Although you are uncomfortably hot and humid at the moment, it’s so wonderful to feel that warm and welcoming atmosphere you project.

I missed this.
I missed all you guys!

With love and ever-present appreciation,
SuperForester Carla

Jacques Henri Lartigue: “Zissou in his Tire Boat, Chateau de Rouzat, 1911″

An incredible photograph of his brother Zissou, by Jacques Henri Lartigue.

Here is a wonderful 4 part documentary on Lartigue.

Laurence Brabant’s Glassware is Gorgeous Gorgeous Recycled Gorgeousness!

Laurence Brabant, glasssss masssssssta.

The collection is called “Cold Cuts” and I’m sure it’s achingly expensive, in that delightfully French sort of way. Bonne idee, mon ami, your glassware is tantalisement!

Laurence Brabant, for showing so clearly that recycling can be sexy, and for using renewable woods like beech and cork to craft those saucy handles, we salute you.

Bravo!

Ici is Laurence’s site.

Robotic Streetart

I just spotted this photograph of a great piece of street art.

It was taken in Rouen, a French city that lies about hundred kilometers North-West of Paris. It also is the hometown of We Are The Robots, a music group that makes, as they describe it, post-punk.
They probably took a look at their name and asked: “how can we promote ourselves through street-art?” And the above was the result! It seems like their promotion is working, too; as the picture shows they attract an age group they would never have attracted with a ‘post-punk’ stamp.

Have an awesome Monday!

Le Parkour

While watching random videos on YouTube today, I discovered parkour; a French recreational activity in which the participants (traceurs) traverse urban structures by running, jumping, etc. in the most fluid way possible.

In the past few years parkour has evolved from a recreational sport to an astonishing art form and a way of life. I mean, watch how these four gentlemen get to the bank!

Have a great weekend!
