Today we finished “Anansi Goes Fishing,”
a west African folk tale of how
spiders learned to spin webs.
To celebrate, my students made our own.
“What is your favorite animal?”
“A kitten!” the chorus answers,
“Elephant!”
“No! a lion!”
“What does a lion do?”
Three beastly nine year olds gnash
their teeth and bear their claws,
snarling, fearsome, adorable.
“A lion ROARS!”
But how?
Ten minutes later, Kevin tells the story:
Lion was shy.
He wanted to make friends with Tiger, but was scared.
One day, Tiger asked lion if he wanted to be friends.
Every day the Tiger roar, and Lion follow.
That’s how Lion roars!
