In 2006, two artists from the Netherlands, Jeroen Koolhas and Dre Urhahn, started developing ideas of creating what they referred to as “community-driven art interventions in Brazil”. After collaborating with the youth to create murals in some of Rio’s most notorious slums, they proceeded by taking on a bigger task, painting an entire hillside favela (slum) in the center of Rio. They planned on creating an “explosion of color, joyfully radiating into the world.” Just recently, the project was completed, and the result is nothing short of that description.
Here are a few of the pictures from around the neighborhood:
Beautiful! I’ve learned about a lot of urban renewal projects throughout the years through my studies, but none so colorful as this. Literally.
Cheers to Koolhas and Urhahn for their inspirational work. You can learn more about their projects on their website.
Love,
