“At one level, he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius”

- Alexandra Shulman (Vogue editor)

“He leaves the fashion world with an unfillable void.”

Green Hangers

If you’re like me, you’ve probably got a wardrobe full of plastic coat hangers. Here’s something that’s way better: Green Hangers, which, funnily enough, are a light grey colour, but green in other ways.

greenhangers1

The Green Hanger is a fully recyclable and biodegradable cardboard coat hanger made from 100% recycled material. Therefore, no trees are cut down specifically for the production of our hanger. Unlike other so called ‘environmentally friendly’ hangers, the Green Hanger production process doesn’t involve the use of harmful glues or inks therefore you can be sure that the hanger is produced with maximum care for the environment.”

At the moment, these hangers are only available in Oz. Though I noticed the BoBhanger is very similar and helps you make hangers using recycled water bottles! Magnifique.

Dallas Shaw – Designer Extraordinaire!

We recently got an email from the bewitchingly named SuperForester Dallas inviting us to check out her site, which we did and that’s where we found these wonderful drawings.

I think they are an utter delight. Such great feeling! Reminds me of Henry Darger meets Windsor McKay meets Coco Chanel. (And when you can combine those three things you’ve got some powerful mojo workin’.)

Dallas has her own Etsy store, where she sells a great variety of wonderful things.
Check her work out, you’ll be glad you did.

Dallas’s site.
Dallas’s blog.

Dallas also designed this wicked bad Obama shirt, which I wish I’d had six months ago.

Clothe yourselves!

When you think of environmentally conscious clothing, does a hessian sack for a dress come to mind? London-based Fashion-Conscience.com has set about sourcing clothes that fall into one of five categories: organic, fair trade, sustainable, recycled or vegan. If you’re wondering what “ethical” clothing really means, and why it’s important, read on:

Organic Although organic cotton is more expensive, you are supporting the environmental and ethical approach to growing the world’s biggest fabric fibre. Choosing organic cotton sends a clear message that we don’t want chemicals in our clothes and allows growers to take precautions against pollution in their own environments.

Fair trade Many companies exploit workers by paying them below official wage rates, making them work excessive hours, they may use underage workers, use “sweatshops”, treat workers poorly in poor conditions, don’t invest in their workers’ skills or communities. Buying fair trade clothes means you won’t abide by this kind of treatment.

Sustainable Choosing sustainable designs means you are sending out a clear message about how you’d prefer your clothing to have minimal impact on the environment, as well as potentially reduce the fabric and discarded clothes mountains already in existence. Plus, sustainable clothes encourage developments in biodegradable materials.

Recycled This prevents the waste of useful materials and reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials and their associated energy and consumption.

Vegan This relates to clothing that has not been made using meat by-products or any animal or animal-tested by-products.

To illustrate how beautiful and wonderfully funky such clothing can be, I’ve pasted a few pieces below.

Manish Arora – Designer to Watch

Manish Arora is an Indian designer based in New Delhi.
I just stumbled onto his work through notcot, and I’m so glad I did!

Look at what this man is doing!:

Easily the most outrageous, most compelling, most exciting designer since Alexander McQueen.
Love this mans work! Can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Here’s his site where you can (no joke) watch a cartoon about his adventures with a fish, as well as see more of his beautiful work.

Incredible.

Thanks, notcot!

Love,

Jackson
