Erin Hanson’s “Need to Want Less”

As humans, we’ve all come across that inner struggle caused by the disconnect between our “wants” and our “needs”. Be it that rich and creamy dessert after a perfectly healthy meal, that new pair of shoes despite you having several perfectly good pairs, and come now, does anyone really “need” an iPad?

This common feature of human existence is what artist and designer Erin Hanson used as inspiration for her Need to Want Less series of “visual modern philosophy”. I came across this series of artwork several months ago, but recently, it’s made a recent resurgence on the inter-webs so I decided to pay closer attention. And I’m so glad I did!

Here’s a taste:

Amazing, no? And underneath the surface of the playful pictures, we find that there is an undeniable sense of sincerity when it comes to her work. She openly calls for us to reflect on our own struggles between the “person we want to be” and the “person we are” and in the end, her artwork beautifully reminds us of all that is really important. All of those things that we really need, compared to all the things that can wait a bit. And for that we thank her.

Please be sure to check out the rest of her amazing set, here!

Hoping you had an amazing long-weekend,
Carla
