SuperForesters, What are you doing for Earth Day?

With Earth Day 2011: A Billion Acts of Green only one week from today, I find myself pondering how my family and I can best express our gratitude to Mother Earth.  Honestly, either because of my crazy hectic life, or perhaps my flakeyness,  most likely a combination of both…I usually don’t even realize Earth Day is here until the little MSNBC Logo turns green for the week. I just don’t keep track of holidays and birthdays very well (and don’t even start talking anniversaries…I forgot MY OWN wedding anniversary this year!) and unless it’s Christmas or the first or last day of the girls’ school, I can’t gaurantee I know it’s coming.

So, since I know Earth Day is coming, ;), I’ve actually checked out the Earth Day website and I love this year’s theme: A Billion Acts of Green.  The idea is simple…pledge to do one thing…big or small.  FABULOUS!

So, I’m ultra stoked that I know Earth Day is next week, and I am excited to be able to put some thought into it.  And I’m SUPER excited to get some ideas from all of you SuperPeeps!  So…what are you doing?  Planting Something?  Cleaning Something?  Meditating and Being Gracious?  Getting involved in a community project?  Making a promise to change one small habit? Getting where you need to go by only walking (or running, if you’re the running type) or bicycling?  Using zero plastic bags?  Eat more (or only) local food?

You can make your pledge and see what others are pledging here.  I am still undecided on my pledge.  I have ideas such as creating and completing a couple more veggie garden patches in the emerging yarden, and I will decide on one small habit to change…with kids, disposable paper products is a hard one for me to overcome…mainly the plates…we did successfully transition to cloth napkins awhile ago :).  But I would also like to do something a little more out of my comfort zone, and that inspiration has yet to emerge.

So…SUPERFOREST…Let’s share ideas and inspire each other!!  I can’t wait to hear what everyone has planned!!

Ewa’s Journal: Let’s Make Earth Smile!

Hi SuperForest!

We –  Earth inhabitants, or  temporary containers (as Jackson  described it), are here only for a while using the kindness of Mother Earth. Thus, we should take care of  it the best we can.  Our existance  should be harmless and creative!  We should make Earth be  proud of having us!

Here are a few tips on how you can make that happen:

  1. Reduce your waste. Don’t use plastic bottles!
  2. Reuse things. Be creative.  Play with things. Dirty hands are fun!
  3. Recycle, recycle, recycle.
  4. Wear eco friendly clothes.
  5. Set up your own garden ( yes to permaculture)  Play with food, make it fun!
  6. Support the Save-A-Seed Coalition on SF Heather’s blog
  7. Read SuperForest. Read the Humanifesto. Spread positive energy!
  8. Treat nature and animals with respect- admire them.

P.S. While writing this post I came across this recycling guide . It is simple, clear and fun, and very suitable for teaching children!

Update on The Plastiki

Hello SuperForesters and Happy Earth Day! To celebrate Earth Day today, I went to hear a talk by author Sarah Elton about her new book Locavore, all about local and sustainable eating! You can read more about what I thought of the book and the talk on my blog, After the Harvest.

I just finished watching Oprah, and she had a brief chat with David deRothschild, who is currently aboard The Plastiki, in the middle of the ocean! This reminded me of my previous post about The Plastiki, and how important the issue of plastic in our oceans really is. Whether you’re a surfer who relies on the ocean for your lifestyle, a fish-eating foodie who relies on healthy, sustainable fish to complement your diet, or just a human, really, who cares about the health of our planet; plastic in our oceans is an environmental issue we all need to do our part to help solve.

On this Earth Day, I thought you might like to catch up with the crew of The Plastiki and see how they’re doing on their journey, and hear some of what they think  about environmental issues and the meaning of Earth Day! Enjoy and pass it on to someone in your life who still drinks bottled water!

Carla’s Journal (4/19/10): EarthFair 2010 – Initial Reactions!

Good Morning, SuperForest!

SuperForester Carla, here, after a fabulous weekend in the company of SuperForesters Iman, Chris, and Jackson. Much was done, much was accomplished, and much needs to be shared! Things are still being shuffled around but the initial reactions are similar to those of any weekend spent in the company of wonderful friends: complete and total gratitude.

Before spilling all the deets, first I’d love to give a big big thank you to SuperForesters Chris and Jackson for taking the time to travel down to San Diego to help make this event a smashing success. I’m continually amazed at their kindness, sincerity, and all around awesomeness. Second, a major thank you goes out to Iman for her constant support and creativity. And third, a huge thank you goes out to all the SuperForesters out there that contributed ideas, showed up at our booth, or even went so far as to send a positive thought our way.

Having the booth was an amazing experience, we look forward to sharing the details as soon as the proverbial “dust” settles. All of the media is currently being process, uploaded, and transferred, but will be shared soon so stay tuned.

In the mean time, here is a quick taste of our EarthFair experience and vibe from our new friend Green Man:

Love!

Carla

San Diego Earth Fair 2009!

Hello SuperForest!

I hope you’re having an astonishingly superb day! As you probably know, Earth Day was the day before yesterday and here in SD we celebrated it with Earth Fair last Sunday. This Earth Fair (the largest free annual environmental fair in the world!) took place at Balboa Park, a large collection of museums and beautiful gardens, arguably one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego. The set up was crowded and busy, packed with over 400 booths each representing their own cause or company and was the perfect place to spread SuperForesty goodness!

Last Friday, two days before the actual event, I decided that Earth Fair was too great an opportunity for SuperForest to pass up. Two days of fun work later, I (accompanied by SuperForester Carla and SuperForester Nika) showed up to the fair, laden with peaceful propaganda that promoted not only SuperForest, but what we hoped to be a representation of the idea that San Diego Earth Fair 2009 would be less about selling material things and more about promoting the positive simplicity of sustainability.

As I explained in the video, we spent the day hanging posters, spreading the Humanifesto to those interested, and most notably, speaking with booths about SuperForest and asking them to put up small signs with our URL and a short description of what we were about. In total, we handed out 20 copies of the Humanifesto, hung up –and walked around holding up– 5 posters, and got 6 gracious booths to help promote our cause: Simple, Plant with Purpose, Cyber-Rain, US Green Building Council, I Love Making Stuff and the Barona Valley Environmental Sustainability Program. Each of these wonderful booths deserves its own post and you’ll definitely read more about them in the near future.

It was an amazing experience. And although it was incredibly hot, and I was very very sick (you may notice that I seem to forget my own name in the video haha), it was awesome to see the power of human interaction. Seeing the booths unite under a common purpose and their kindness in helping us out, along with seeing peoples’ faces as they squinted trying to read my handmade signs filled me with a surge of hope and happiness. Yay! Limitless proof of human kind’s willingness to help one another and be open to positivity is alive, well, and all around us.
Have a wonderful weekend,
-iman

SuperForester Joanna’s Earth Day Lesson

I sure didn’t.

I just learned this and a lot more at SuperForester Jo’s excellent blog, Joannatorium.

Great post, Jo!

SuperForester Christine Celebrates Her Dietz Lantern for Earth Day!

picture-61

Happy, lovely, magical Earth Day, y’all!

Recently I bought a pair of Dietz Lil’ Wizard lanterns from the incredible Lehman’s catalog. I bought two so that I could give one away as a gift, which I promptly did, to SuperForester Christine.

Well, the incandescent Ms. Norrie has written a lovely Earth Day post extolling the quiet loveliness of her lantern and the warm, cozy glow it can make.

Life is hectic and busy, so to spend an hour or two in the dark, with only a lantern to glow up a space is practically therapy.

Read Christine’s lovely post here.
And here is my post about getting the lanterns in the first place.
And here is a link to the handy-as-all-get-out Lehman’s catalog, which I adore.

Get yourself a lantern or two, you won’t regret it.

Happy Earth Day!

The Books: “An Owl With Knees”

If Earth Day had a soundtrack, I’m pretty sure this song would be included.

You know that incredibly calming sense of presence you get when you just take a moment to feel the intense beauty of the environment that surrounds you after being wrapped up in your own thoughts? The amazing sound of leaves fluttering in the wind? The electrifying feeling of the icy cold ocean creeping up and touching your toes? The sense of unity with nature? Or better yet, the soothing nature of feeling in general? That’s exactly how I felt while watching that music video.

That lovely piece was created by The Books, a musical group composed of a couple of guys from New York who, put simply, create incredible sounds. What’s more amazing is that Paul de Jong and Nick Zammuto do all of their own sample collecting, composing, writing, recording, mixing, and mastering using PCs running cheap software and “ragtag equipment that [they’ve] pieced together over the years.” That’s my kind of artist! Taking DIY to the extreme!

Happy Earth Day SuperForest.
Happy EVERY Day!

Love to All,
Carla

With Our Powers Combined!

If that last post was too heady for a light, breezy Earth Day afternoon… here’s a little something to cheer you right up!

Forget about helpless, sexy reporters or unaccompanied toddlers… every tree, bird and ocean needs a hero too.  Thank god for Captain Planet!   If you ever feel overwhelmed, that there is just too much pollution, deforestation and general lack of motivation for a sustainable  environmental revolution… just remember those 5 conscientious kids of obscure international origins, who with the power of their funny names and the strength of their elemental rings… stood up and said “We will protect Whoopi Goldberg (aka. the voice of “Mother Gaia) and save this planet!”

If you doing nothing else today to benefit the planet… spend a minute and listen to the inspirational words of The Planeteers.  Their words are so wise.  And their rap is oh so fresh!

Impression Sessions: Earth Day

Reflections on our planet.
earth-3d-space-tour_1
Today is Earth Day, yes. It is a day in which we celebrate the beauty, diversity… and fragility of our blue-green globe. It is a day for much joy and positivity, for a reflection on our footprints. And hopefully it is a day that inspires awareness, activism and change.

But really, what is Earth Day? Or more importantly, what is a day without the Earth? If we look at everything in our lives, from the ground we walk on to the sky we breath… from our eyes to see or our lungs to breath, everything is an extension of the Earth. We would not exist, nor would we have the ability to think, to appreciate or to create a day in her honor, if all was not given to to us by the miracle of this planet we are blessed to be a part of.

I know this may sound obvious. Silly even. But how often do we take advantage of this very simple truth: we are the earth and the earth is us. We are shaped from the same fibers. We pull food, water, industry… life itself from Earth’s endless fabric. How often do we fully realize the complete, encompassing extent of what our Earth provides? Is one day enough?

And what is a day even, without connection to the Earth?  Think about it… a day on its own is nothing more than one full revolution of Earth as it moves through Space.

We as individuals are nothing more than one full revolution of life as it moves through Earth’s Great Cycle.

Love the earth.  Love each other.  Love yourself.  Ultimately, it’s all the same thing.

–Aaron

Happy Earth Day, SuperForest!!!!!!

Earth Day. Earth Month. Earth Year. Earth Earth….

Love love love love love!

It’s funny, but I’ve noticed a direct correlation between the amount of posting that occurs on SuperForest, and the amount of sweet behind-the-scenes activity going on… As in, when posting slows down, there’s usually a lot of cool stuff going on.

And this is very true this fine Earth Day, April 22nd, 2009.

Yesterday, I went and spoke to an amazing bunch of kids at P.S. 58 in Brooklyn. We spoke about the Humanifesto, blogging, mentorship, Peace. We did a hand-washing/bubble blowing demo. It was great! Videos and posts to come!

Ms. Ladd’s class at P.S. 58 are going to start their own team blog, just like SuperForest!, and Team SuperForest is going to help them do it! They will be like little SuperForest Seedlings! I’m going to make them all press passes and ask them to report on the green goings on around them. Amazing. Eco from a ten year old’s perspective.

Last night, I ventured over to SuperForester Christine’s apartment to help her assemble her Earth Day natural gum activity booklets… But that’s a whole ‘nother post…

Also, the intrepid Salehian Sisters have an amazing Earth Day project that they’ve been concocting, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise….. Eee hee hee!

Lots going on, thank you for your patience if posting seems sparse.

Love to All, and thank you for reading SuperForest!
