The Millenium Seed Bank is in Trouble. What Can We Do to Help?

(via flickr user andyp uk.)

Dear SuperForest,

I read yesterday that the Millennium Seed Bank is in dire financial straights.

What is the Millennium Seed Bank?

From Wikipedia:

“The Millennium Seed Bank Project is an international conservation project coordinated by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Launched in the year 2000… its purpose is to provide an “insurance policy” against the extinction of plants in the wild by storing seeds for future use. The storage facilities consist of large underground frozen vaults preserving the world’s largest collection of seeds.

In April 2007 it banked its billionth seed, the Oxytenanthera abyssinica, a type of African bamboo.”

“But the cooling of the global economy is threatening to freeze the whole project. All it takes is 2,000 pounds to save one seed, and with at least four species of plants vanishing every year, conservationists believe this is an excellent value.”

-via russiatoday.com.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Okay, one seed’s continued survival cost £2000 pounds.
£2000 English pounds is currently valued at $2995.8 US dollars.

I propose to you, dear friends and readers, that we raise this sum, via a paypal donation bin, and that as a group we host the continued existence of one seed. The SuperForest seed!

We may not be able to support the entire project, but we can certainly support one seed.

Hosting this as yet nameless seed can be our gift to the future. It can also show how beautifully technology can work to support and buttress worthwhile thoughts and movements from the forces of economic downturns and the like.

The Millenium Seed Bank needs us just as much as we need it.

Can we do it?

One seed for SuperForest! And SuperForest for one seed!

Let’s do this thing.

Massive love to all!

-Jackson

To let you keep track of your own fabulous donations we created this counter.

Goods for Good!

Goods for Good is an amazing organization that was started by an old friend of mine, Melissa Kushner. She is doing a remarkable job doing something we all wish we had the stamina and determination to accomplish.
She approaches corporate companies to see what excess materials they have (anything from clothes, pens, paper etc.) and ships them to Malawi and Liberia, where she works with local groups to distribute these materials to kids who need them. It seems like a perfect plan: We have tons and tons of extra stuff, let’s see you needs it! The ultimate in recycling!
SuperForester Damani, just went to Malawi to document the progress Melissa and her team have been making.
Here’s the unbelievably beautiful video:

“Goods for Good turns excess into progress. Our slogan is straightforward because our mission is straightforward. We collect surplus goods for targeted distribution to vulnerable children in Africa.

Through partnerships with companies in the United States and local organizations in Africa, we are able to provide much needed school supplies, clothing and health and hygiene products to orphans and vulnerable children, while at the same time reducing waste at home.

We rely on donations of surplus goods from a wide range of companies. Our volunteers help to sort the items and our donors fund the shipment. In Africa, we build on the success of local schools and community centers by supplying them with the tools they need to care for and educate children.

Many of the items we ship to children were gathering dust in warehouses or were slated to be destroyed. On the other side of the world, these same products have an immeasurable worth to disadvantaged children. Together with our international and local partners, we work to develop sustainable care for Africa’s youth.”

If you can offer any help, please do!

Absolutely inspiring and remarkable!

Terracycle: Turning Garbage into Gold!

Good Morning!

I was just watching the new video over at DH Love Life.
It is on a company called Terracycle. They are based in Trenton, NJ and they make different products completely out of waste (including all their packaging which is made from old bottles). The DH video is all about their fertilizer that they make from Worm Poop! Apparently, it works great! How clever. They also make all naturally derived household cleaners, trash bins made from crushed computers, and bags from old wrappers.

What is super neat is as they think of new products to make, they see what waste can be used to create them and then they show on their site what they need and coordinate how to get it. It is direct recycling, where you know it is going to be reused. They send you the postage and once you have collected a substantial amount of containers, you ship them to Terrcycle, who reuses them. It eliminates the middle man and they make a donation to a school or charity of your choice for each item you send. What a great business idea.

If you have the means to collect a large amount of the packaging they need, think about signing up!
Have a great day!

How Obama Reinvented Campaign Finance

One of the major things that has drawn we SuperForesters to Barack Obama is his ‘net savvy. For reals, this cat understands what web 2.0 is, and most importantly, what it can be.

Check out this infographic up at xplaned, showing how Obama’s micro-campaign finance system has beaten the odds.

G’Obama!

Special thanks to swissmiss for the head’s up!
