Revisiting Michael Pritchard’s “Lifesaver”: A Water Filter that Could Change the Planet

Michael Pritchard

Good morning, SuperForest!

My love for TED Talks continues to expand. This morning, I watched a speech given by Michael Pritchard, a water treatment expert, who after witnessing the devastating aftermath of the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, became intensely focused on crafting a water purification bottle that could “revolutionize water delivery systems in disaster stricken areas across the globe.”

Now, SuperForest has written about water purification systems, before. I was completely awestruck when I learned of Dean Kamen’s Slingshot Water Purifier. But unfortunately, when I emailed his company (a couple times) for more information, they told me the machine was not yet in production and was nowhere near available for a domestic trial run. I continued to ask around for more information about other water purification systems but all had specific system requirements needed to produce the best results. SuperForester Taylor introduced us to Pritchard’s “Lifesaver” about a year ago, and after watching this awesome demonstration given at Oxford, I felt it was time to bring it up again.

So to sum it up,

Using a non-chemical nano-filtration hollow fiber membrane with 15 nanometer pores (it is designed to block viruses), the Lifesaver bottle can make the most revolting swamp water drinkable in seconds. Better still, a single long-lasting filter can clean 6,000 liters of water. Given the astronomical cost of shipping water to disaster areas, Pritchard’s Lifesaver bottle could turn traditional aid models on their heads.

Lifesaver

Absolutely amazing. Cheers to the Pritchards, the Kamens and all of the other brilliant minds out there working to provide people with the tools to provide for themselves.

Hope you are all having an amazing weekend!

Dean Kamen’s Mind-Controlled Prosthetic Arm

Dean Kamen Shows Off Slingshot Water Purifier

Morning All!

Just read about this over at dvice.com

Dean Kamen has invented a machine that purifies water. What’s revolutionary about it is that it works with no chemicals, filters, or membranes, and it can purify just about anything wet.

Puddles of toxic waste in = drinking water out.

Check it:

“Part of saving our environment relies heavily on figuring out new ways to process our natural resources in a self-sustaining, cost effective way. Dean Kamen, the man who brought us the Segway, has just such a solution in the form of a water purification device called the Slingshot. Kamen claims the Slingshot can take nearly any source of moisture–including ocean water, urine or sewage–and quickly turn it into safe drinking water. The Slingshot process operates by means of vapor compression distillation, requires no filters, and can operate using the most efficient fuel known to man: cow dung. In addition to producing drinkable water, the Slingshot also generates enough electricity to light 70 energy-efficient light bulbs.

In order to push adoption of the potentially Earth-changing gadget, Kamen hopes to seed thousands of the units with local village entrepreneurs, in much the same way independent cell phone businesses have thrived and gradually changed the face of many impoverished areas around the globe. Although not ready for pick-up at your local Wal Mart, Kamen’s future target price for the device is in the $1,000 to $2,000 range (a rather attractive price when you consider what we pay for laptops and cell phones). You can see Kamen showing off his new invention by vaporizing Stephen Colbert’s toxic potato chips here.”

Dean Kamen, you so rad.

Dean Kamen’s New Arm

Dean Kamen…

Wow.

For those of you saying: “Who?”
Dean Kamen Wikipedia

The modern-day Da Vinci has once more outdone himself. Beyond inventing the first portable dialysis machine, or heart stents, or insulin pumps, or gyroscopic wheelchairs, he’s now set his sights on prosthetics.

Because so many of our troops in Iraq are coming back missing one or both arms, the Department of Defence came to him and asked him for help. He researched the idea and his team came up with the most amazing thing I’ve seen today: A working prototype of a prosthetic arm.

Check out this video:

I love and worship this man’s ingenuity.

Few people have done so much in so short an amount of time to help their fellow humans. Dean Kamen is an inspiration to us all.
