Of all the urban studies and planning courses I’ve taken, seldom have I had one that doesn’t mention city planner/architect Daniel Burnham. He was Director of Works for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago (which consequently launched the City Beautiful Movement), drafted the Chicago city plan, and designed several notable structures including the Flatiron building and Union Station in Washington D.C. In addition to this, he is remembered for the following quote; one that provides limitless inspiration.
Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty. Think big.
Love to all you dreamers and free thinkers.
